That really means US consumers ought to be educated on how to bag properly and quickly.

Not sure about you, but for some, price is the only responsibility of a seller in capitalism. These people fail to see the difference between personal responsibility in free decisions and total indifference to the consequences of your decisions. Liberal-democracy-capitalism isn't about being indifferent, it's about being free to make decisions - and to support the ramifications of your actions.

I've seen it done both ways (customer bagging and cashier bagging and bagboy bagging) and I don't think it makes any difference in time. All of the checkout lanes here are designed for someone behind the counter to bag, though, so a change would be inefficient.meet the new boss, same as the old boss

The things you say give capitalism a bad name, since you try to excuse inacceptable consequences by painting a black and white picture of capitalism vs. communism.
You should think in terms of ends not means. Capitalism is supposed to be superior to communism because it serves society better, because it's more capable of creating wealth. If however a system doesn't succeed in creating wealth but poverty, it failed. May it be communism in Cuba or Wal-Martism in rural USA.
Since when did any of those mom and pop stores cry when one of their competitors went out of business? Hate to break it to you but they are there to make money to.
In my home town of about 3000 people walmart came in and sure enough a few stores went out of busniess but guess what those stores sold crap and charged too much for it because they knew people didn't want to drive 30 miles to a bigger city. A few years later other stores came in and sold as good or better for about the same price and they are doing fairly well as does walmart. When walmart started selling food one of the grocery stores went out of busniess but now there are two new ones that do very well.
Don't get me wrong, I used to work for them and they are all about making money and they don't like Unions but I don't care. I got plenty of stocks from my time there (part of which they paid for) and all in all with a few exceptions it was one of the more pleasant working atmospheres that I have worked at. Only thing that I really wished had been different is that I could have gotten a commission on all the **** I sold. But in a way I did cause every year I got a 900 check for profit sharing from the store I worked at stayed busy and we kept those TV, DVDs, computers, bikes and all kinds of crap rolling out that door.
IMO the only thing walmart needs to work on is atmosphere of it's stores. compared to target and other higher end stores, the atmosphere sucks.Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

the industry is agreed that the success-spoiled Americans stumbled on their own arroganceI came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
