I have a friend from eighth grade (eight years ago) who I talk to everyday. I have a friend that I've known since seventh grade, but only became friends with towards the end of high school. I still live very close to two friends from my childhood, but I don't talk to either one of them anymore. One I simply grew apart from, and the other I had a gigantic falling out with several years back.

A group of friends from highschool get together at the same location and time every year for a camping trip. We've been doing it yearly for over 20 years now.

Like that. Been married nearly 33 years now, so that's one friend. She has several friends that go back to the 70's and 80's, I have one -- we get together twice a year or so, talk on the phone a bit. As to the others ...

Myspace as well as blogs help. Basically they let people stay in contact with each other without really trying very hard. That's a good thing as people drift apart.

Wow, well that is encouraging. Nice to know it's at least possible. :/

I get depressed thinking about this.

Just out of curiosity - have you ever considered to shut down your computer and open your front door to see what goes on outside it ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
