                      Homs it's the ancient town of Emesa. Julia Dom(i)na, wife of emperor Septimius Sever, was daughter of local archpriest. Emesa was one of a couple of small states founded in Syria by arabic tribes, it was ruled by the archpriest. Heliogabal, the transvestite emperor of Rome, was the archpriest and relative of Julia Domna if I'm not mistaken.

                              • a tower in the city walls. The walls around were destroyed, but, luckily, this tower survived. It seems they've made a minaret out of it
