My suspicion is that Microsoft is simply to stingy to mass-license the codecs for its users...

No, you have to pay for a plug-in
They're not expensive, you know... Between 10 and 20 bucks.

I'd be surprised, if the player didn't come with sufficient software...

I seem to recall Media Player Classic playing DVD's nicely.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

Depends if you are living in a plutocracy or not. In Denmark it is perfectly legal to decode CSS to watch your own DVD.

Anyway, on Linux there are several good choices. I have used Okle or Ogle, and it works fine.

The problem isn't decoding CSS, it's paying the licensing fees for the MPEG2 decoding software (which involves its patents), not copy protection.

Unless Denmark is a third world country (which very well may be the case!), it's still illegal in that country to use patented, licensed technology without acquiring a license.

Unless patents in the Kingdom of Denmark don't extend as long as their do here, which may be the case. How long does MPEG-2 have it's patent for, anyway?

He was referring to the duration of patent protections, not the extent.

Not necessarily. Some countries may not recognise "software patents."

                        MPEG2 isn't a software patent, it's a mathematical one.

this is not to put down Urban Ranger, but I have learned that when you are outclassed in a conversation, it is best to take a classy approach and not say things that are stupid, just to have something to say.

It appears what they are doing in Denmark is legal, under their laws.
