    (Windows XP Pro SP2)

Tuesday I downloaded the Firefox update(the only major change thing I did that day so far). Then I tried to open a zip purportedly containing Avid Free DV (a video editor that I found off a link from Wikipedia) and the computer hanged for a minute, then I could close my programs but it was real slow. So I closed them (MSN Messenger, Firefox, a folder) and was going to reboot, and on shutting down Windows selected the option to install updates then shut down. So they installed and then the PC shut down, and a couple minutes later I turn it back on.

It goes through the little black screen with the blue progress bar (the WinXP start screen) and stops there. The progress bar is moving, but it stays that way for about thirty minutes. Something was amiss. So I restarted again and got the same thing. Starting in safe mode worked but I got the freezes again, where I'd click something or start a new program and it would freeze for a minute (or so) before moving along. I run a virus check and spyware check, find nothing. The good news is the next time I rebooted, Windows actually started.

Yet it was still slow - so I opened Mozilla to search for help (wasting you guyss time with a post like this isnt a first resort), and an error came up that said "C:/etc/firefox.exe is not a valid Win 32 application." AAGH So I'm using Internet Explorer the last few days. I downloaded the last virus definitions and spybot S&D update, and neither found anything still. I went to Microsoft Update (update.microsoft.com) and installed the activex, then a box that said You will have to reboot for system changes to take effect (I wish I could remember it specifically, it might have been "changes to system settings"), and I clicked Restart.

Windows starts, I get - (this specific error was on the back of another note and I tossed it) Cannot register OCX c:/file path/muweb.dll. (Sorry for being so helpful.) So I click OK, go to update site again, install the activex control again, restart again, the same thing happens. So I just put my thinking cap on and used the update tool in the system tray on the bottom right end of the screen. I just installed genuine windows notification and another security update. No help.

The computer is still slow as molasses. I Ctrl+Alt+Del and looked up all the tasks running, and the only ones that were close to not belonging was spoolsv.exe (search said it was a printer-related thing - I don't have a printer installed???) and six instances of svchost.exe (although another search said that many was typical.)

I've tried about everything I can think of, and if you guys are stumped too I'll just do a fresh reinstall of Windows. I have some pictures I would like to back up first though, so I right clicked "My Documents" to see the size of the folder and I got an error titled "Desktop" that said "The properties of this item are not available."

That's it. Hopefully someone here can recognize what my computer's problem is and point me to a fix.

    Thanks in advance

Before you go to that last resort, have you done all maintenance? GOOD spyware, malware, and registry cleaner programs? Registry, especially.

I have some heavy hitter programs, even beyond those.

Look at the CPU usage, what's eating up all the time?

Nothing! Windows's Disk Cleaner tool used 50% when I tried it (and it was slow), but Registry Mechanic (a limited free trial registry cleaner) was slow and maxed out around 1-2% when looking in the task manager. Nothing except Disk Cleaner, I've noticed, has used more than 5% or so CPU time.

          SlowwHand or anyone
Can you recommend a good free registry cleaner? I downloaded Registry Mechanic which looked free then hit me with BAM you have to register for it to clean everything, so about 400 of 600 issues were left unresolved.

Was the Avid archive download from www.avid.com or a 3rd party?

I found "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner", which is free and looks legit. It fixed most of the stuff but Registry Mechanic still found 65 problems after it, so that would help. After the registry cleaning the system is running a bit faster but it still slows when I'm opening some programs (such as windows explorer).

I went ahead for the last resort of reinstalling Windows, using the CD that came with the computer. That went fine, reformatted the hard drive with the Windows installer, and installed just fine. But the first time Windows started it stopped and gave me this blue screen:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

blah blah restart if this is the first time"

I restart, the same message. It advises to check for viruses (did and would do again but I can't even get into Windows), remove any newly installed hard drives (none), and run chkdsk /f to check for corruption. I would but I get the same message every time I start the computer, even in safe mode. So now what?

BTW this is the last line of the blue screen:

                      "Technical Information:

                      *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C85524, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

So do I need to make a boot disk with chkdsk on it?

Ran chkdsk from the Windows recovery console. It reported it fixed some things.

                        Rebooted - same error

Rebooted, noticed a "Hard Drive Diagnostics" option in the boot menu, and selected it. I get, "Maxtor 6Y160M0 - Fail. Return Code: 7"

A post on the Dell support forum said a code 7 meant the drive has failed. It seems like a likely possibility - while I was backing up my files, a few of them wouldn't copy or open.

                        That's that, I guess.

So could a moderator please change the title of this thread to Recommend mrmitchell a new hard drive?

I'm looking for price and performance - since I wasn't using all 160GB anyway, size isn't a top priority.

Yeah, sounds like the hard drive. We've had lot of them go south on us and the first sympton is always a slow computer, specifically any disk access.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

How old is your HDD? Is it still under warranty (most have 3 years)?
