  • de Gaulle's Betrayal?

I was listening to some guy giving a lecture on US history and Iraq and the effects of guerrilla warfare on soldiers and he said when the French effort to keep Algeria ended in failure, de Gaulle gave the Algerians the names of 16,000 French soldiers stationed there and wouldn't bring them home. The reason being the kind of warfare they were engaged in produces severe psychological problems and returning soldiers are at much greater risk of causing problems.

Anyone know about this? I was stunned when the guy said it, if this is true de Gaulle betrayed his own troops.

Were those ethnic French, or Algerians fighting for France? I do know the French left the many Algerians that had fought on their side to their fate when they gave up on Algeria. Needless to say, they were not much loved by their victorious insurgent compatriots ...

De Gaulle had a history of forgetting allies
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

I would imagine it refers to the Harkis too (Algerians fighitng for France). We brought only a few of them in France after the Algerian victory.

And, as far as I know, they were slaughtered when left there.

A man's gotta have his priorities straight. At the time, he needed to turn his attention to fighting Britain and ruling continental Europe.

We could have brought them in France, like we did with a few of them.

That was not a defense of de Gaulle's actions or character I posted. It was the opposite.

And saved their lives in the process.

We are talking about Algerians who willingly (be it by opportunism or idealism) chose to fight for France against their fellow Algerians. And about how many of these people were left to die in Algeria after the end of the war.

the algerians knew what they were doing. i have no sympathy for people who sign up for war and get the shaft at the end.

Sounds like France's "Bay of Pigs", or rather Bay of Pigs sounds like the US's "Algeria".
