'Brum' is short for Birmingham, and 'Brummie' is both someone from there and the accent. When you say 'Broomy' that might be an attempt at phonetic spelling the of way Brummies promounce it. Although the 'u' is not quite as long as in 'broom' or 'room'.

In my opinion the Brummie accent is just a special case of the Black Country accent - which is like Brummie but more expressive and colourful, and less nasal. The Black Country is the area to the north and west of Birmingham where the Industrial Age was born in this fair isle.

Of course, in civilised places like Germany there are no regional variations, as we learned on the pancake thread.

Apologies to Sloww for the TJ.

I used to watch Reading Rainbow as a kid.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Its "Brummy" but it sounds like "Broomy" when Brummies say it. They have an accent that knocks off 50 points from their percieved IQ as soon as you meet one!

(PH) IIRC, Gazablanca used to live up in Newcastle or that area. Only problem is, he has not been seen since April 2005
