Dive or Fly?

Myself, Wifey, and Josie need to be in Minneapolis on August 12th for a wedding. It's 700 miles (about 12 hours) away.

Car gets about $25 miles/gallon, assuming an average price of gas is $3.25

Josie can ride on our laps for free on the plane. There are direct flights for $750-$800 for the pair and it's about a 4 hour flight.

If we drove we'd stop in Chicago, rooms run about what? $100/night.

I'm just wondering if 24 hours in a car with a 1 year old is worth any cost savings.

So it's almost 200 for the gas, another 200 for the stops. Plus potentially extra days holidays you'd have to take, possibly requiring extra restraunt meals that might cost a bit more.

It depends on how your child travels. I'd suggest flying, the economics aren't bad and there is a risk of 24 hours stuck in a car with a screaming kid.

Still, we'd probably leave the same day just spend more time there. The person getting married is a good friend of my wives. They were trying to plan on doing something before the wedding; spa or something. If we drove they wouldn't be able to do that, if we flew they would.

If cost is the only concern, remember that flying will involve taxis/airport parking/car rental on top of the airline tickets.

Personally, though, I'd fly because I doubt two 12 hour drives with a one year old would be much fun.

700 miles doesnt taken twelve hours - you should be there in about 10.
