The 3rd year breakout thing is mostly a myth.
It really isn't. There have been scores of recievers who have broken out in their 3rd seasons. Far more than those who have broken out in their 2nd or later years. The fact that it happens so often indicates that it is a common phenomenon. Especially with a player like Williams who seems to be right on the verge.
I'm also not convinced that Martz makes people that much better. He had a Hall of Fame halfback and two Hall of Fame level WRs. And by this point, to say that it was the schemes and not the incredible talent of Faulk, Bruce, and Holt is absurd. It's like saying Indianapolis OC Tom Moore is a genius.
Well, aside from the fact that Faulk had his best years under Martz's offense, no matter what you think of Martz, he is 1000000x better than Mooch's offense.
And if you do ask people inside the NFL, they'll tell you that Martz' schemes were just as responsible for the success of the offense as were Faulk, Bruce, and Holt. It isn't like Warner or Bulger called their own plays or anything.
It's almost like saying Don Coryell was a hack because he had Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Roy Williams hasn't had a spectacular start yet, which is fine, he could be a third year bloomer or later. But if one of the most prolific WRs ever doesn't always make it to 10 touchdowns, it's crazy for Imran to suggest Williams is more likely than not to reach 10 touchdowns. Especially considering how random the TD distribution is. Joe Jurevicius got 10 on only 600something yards, while Reggie Wayne got about 5 on 1200."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Why is it crazy when he's had 8 TDs for each of his first two years while with a horrid QB and a horrid offensive system? It only goes to figure that he has a very very good chance to hit double digits with a better QB and a far, far better offensive system. And he hits his 3rd year.
Williams has shown himself to have an eye for the endzone. I don't see why those TD numbers shouldn't increase with more passes caught.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Mariucci, on the other hand, was godawful. He passed the ball 89% of the time on 3rd and 2. (Unsurprisingly, runs on 3rd and 2 are far more likely to be successful.)
The outlook is good for Williams, sure, and if he catches for 1200 and 9 TDs, we'll applaud his breakout. Incidentally, those are also Driver's 2004 numbers. For a 2nd or 3rd WR, which Driver should be on a good fantasy team, I find it preferable to have a reliable guy, and then take the fliers later on in the draft."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. I certainly don't mean to disparage Martz's skills, but I think some terrible coaches could make spectacular offenses with the players Martz had. It is a fair question to ask, why Moore isn't considered a genius but Martz is.
Very simply, because it isn't about the players. Moore does not exactly play an innovative style of offense. Coryell had wonderful offensive players, but created a new system (Air Coryell wasn't just throwing it deep, btw). Martz, similar. Though he had good players (and who is really know if Holt would have been as good as he turned out to be with different coaching), Martz is well known for his ultra complicated schemes, which cause defensive coordinators fits. It's one thing to have great players at every position (Cincy, Indy both in 2006 for example). It is quite another to have an innovative system in place.
It's why Bill Walsh is revered, even though he had Montana.
if he catches for 1200 and 9 TDs, we'll applaud his breakout
Probably not. That's only 1 more TD and 400 more yards than his rookie year. I'm thinking more 1300-1400 yards and 13 TDs as the breakout year.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

One more word on the 3rd year breakout, before I need to do some work. If it's so common, there should have been some third year breakouts last year.

Exception proves the rule (though Kevin Curtis was limited in a 3rd reciever role and put up big numbers for that role)
Just ignore Javon Walker, Steve Smith, Terrell Owens (look at those TDs), Plaxico Burress, Rod Smith, Eric Moulds, Santana Moss, Laverneus Coles, Jerry Porter, etc.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Pretty easy when you list guys from about six different draft classes.
Walker was the only 3rd year breakout with over 1000 yards in 2004. Steve Smith and Santana Moss were the only ones to fit those criteria in 2003.
So yes, of Roy Williams, Lee Evans, Michael Jenkins, Ernest Wilford, Bernard Berrian, Samie Parker, etc, we can expect at most a couple of guys from the 2004 draft class to make a significant leap. The rest will bloom later, or not at all."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. Japher: Me, or Vlad?
I'm not starting Coles, I'm starting three RBs. If the Jets figure out how to get a competent and healthy quarterback out of the four they have, he should be great. However, I'm not counting on it, and that's why Coles is a backup.
Tuber: Vilma was taken two rounds ago."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran
