You haven't come within coo-ee of understanding what I said, have you?

                1) The 'World Football' thread
                a) 'World Football' is a misleading and innacurate thread title since it is mostly used for discussing club-level sport.
(I don't expect that to change, but you seem to think that I'm not entitled to an opinion on the matter)
                b) The thread is bloated because it is trying to serve too many interests at once.
(Premier League, UEFA, Champion's League, Serie A, sporting trivia, FIFA events, etc. are all bundled into a single thread)
                c) The thread has a long history.
(Maybe that's not a problem for you. But it presents a barrier to anyone who is new to the forum)
                d) It is an impractical and ineffective means of communication.
(Last time I logged on I had to go through 17 pages of new posts just to catch up)

That might be acceptable for soccer tragics, but it discourages casual spectators. It may be your intention to discourage casual spectators, I don't know. But it's also possible that 'the-largest-sporting-event-in-the-world' has more to gain from an inclusive rather than an exclusive attitude. If the intent of this thread is to be exclusive towards outsiders, then you have already acheived your purpose and there is nothing that needs to change. Alternatively,..

                e) Creating dedicated 'FIFA World Cup' threads might be a step in the right direction.
(Might not be perfect, but it's as good an idea as any)

                2) Soccer vs Football
Australian Football predates Association Football. Fact.
Go ahead and troll the Yanks all you like, but that dog won't hunt with me. I have no intention of wasting my time on this futile argument.

                3) My Threads
ZOMFG! Three whole threads in three weeks!
The server is falling on our heads!!1!

                Let's look at the facts:

                a) World Cup - Germany, 2006
                i. Newsflash! The FIFA tournament is not the only World Cup being held in Germany this year. I apologise for the existential crisis this realisation may have provoked amongst you all.

ii. Only one team (Holland) has ever before held the World Cup, the Olympic Gold Medal and the Champion's Trophy at the same time. Australia has a good chance of equalling that acheivement this year. Feel free to criticise when your team comes close - in any sport. I'll be holding my breath... really.

                b) Holland bought the ref.
Probably unneccesary. Fair enough. But hell, call it synchronicity, trivia or just plain spam. It's up to you. Even Ming didn't see the need to close this one down. No 'tubbies were harmed in the testing of this product.

                c) World Soda Thread
Part of a work-in-progress. The builders were a bit noisy and it didn't really hit the mark, I know. But I think I've got the concept worked out now, so you'll just have to be patient and make up your own mind about whether it was worth it. Which brings me to,..

                4) The Big Idea
FIFA World Cup (Stories) Thread - XXL
Standard practice for demo games. One thread for the mechanics of turn-passing. One thread for discussion and trash-talk. In this case, it's a bit tricky trying to work out the proper line of demarcation. But I think I've got it sussed.
Match results and commentary should go in the main thread as always. The stories thread would be for human interest stories, news reports, sporting trivia and so on. Obviously, the Cup is over now, so we'll have to wait a few years to try it out. Might not work out, but I think it's worth a try.

End of chat? Don't flatter yourself kiddo. This discussion was over before it even began.

Only my strict intent to forgive and not to escalate the hostility has kept any semblance of communication in tact. Your childish aggression checked you out before we even got started.

Let me assure you, masking foul language behind one little smart-alec typo does nothing to hide the fact that your post was needlessly hostile and offensive. Frankly, I feel you owe me an apology here.

True, I can be a clumsy fvcker at times. My posts don't always hit the mark. And your brash sarcasm makes you more enemies than friends. But anger and resentment are corrosive. I have no desire to go down that path. I hope we bury the hatchet and put it down to just an unneccesary misunderstanding. Ball's in your caut.

It has to be called 'World Football', because the mighty ole You Ess of Aye has it's own sport, also called 'Football', and despite the very obvious fact that the threads on American Football should be called 'American Football' threads, our chief and much-respected overlord here, who is a fan of American Football, has decided otherwise.

That is why we are not allowed to call the Football Thread the Football Thread.
                    What Imran and Duckie said.

It's the "world football" thread because it was originally very heavily Anglo-oriented (and still is, though the world cup brought more differing perspectives), and the thread starter wanted to make sure that non-English football matters would find a home in this thread.

The first time a football tread with "football" appeared in the title instead of soccer, it was spammed by Sava, for whome "football" is the American game. This has prompted Imran to start "world soccer threads", in order to avoid such asshattery.

Once the thread became institutionalized enough, combined with the fact that Alva (a Euro) happened to start a new one, the word "football" could come back without the Savaian threat. The "world" part has remained, in order to show posters from all countries/leagues that their football-related posts are relevant to this thread, despite the very clear dominance of English-related posts.

                      • Terra, you are an idiot (and I don't care that I'm discussing the poster, blah, blah). "World", as in the entire world. "Football" as in the sport where you kick the ball around and try to score goals. "Thread" as in a place where you post.

Now, it was always my impression that club level football was a part of the WORLD... though that depends on what planet you may be living on, Terra .

[q=Spiffor]the thread starter wanted to make sure that non-English football matters would find a home in this thread.[/q]

Quite right Spiff. In the first "Worldwide Soccer Thread", I stated (somewhere) that I wanted to discuss more than just England. I think I even said something about Barca, but I can't remember at the moment. Also I was quite sure, I'd mention the US National Team or the MLS at some point and didn't want to be accused of threadjacking .

Also correct that Sava used to spam whatever football threads there were that didn't have 'soccer' in the title instead of 'football'. He would post wallpaper sized pictures of the Chicago Bears. It wasn't just one thread, but a number of them. I realized the threat and started the "Soccer" thread. In fact, I believe that has a discussion on the topic on its first page.

As for not being accessable to everyone, well, that may be true, but before this institution existed there was hardly ANY football talk at all! People didn't really want to start threads on their fav club sides because there weren't all that many responses to justify an entire thread. Combining it one allowed people to have conversations about some topic/signing that would be far smaller than what you'd expect from a thread (and such specialized topics are easier to be spammed as people see no one is really posting, or you wait for a reply that may come 8 hours from poster to poster).

For example take the little conversation we just had on Duff's signing. Not enough for its own thread. PERFECT for here.

Blasphemy! There can never be too much football on TV.

The Arsenal v Ajax game was good fun yesterday. It was a real treat to see Cruyff play and a huge tribute to Bergkamp. Also, I think that if he really wanted to Van Basten could still play professional football at a pretty high level - he looked really good.

The foul on Davids when he was through on goal was really funny. It wouldn't have been quite so amusing if he'd got injured, but thankfully it worked out OK.

The Emirates Stadium looks great too. I look forward to Spurs beating Arsenal there next season.
