The Icelandic Commonwealth was an extremely fascinating social order back before the 2nd millennium. No reason to trash talk there.

Does the 'Herra' in your handle stand for 'mister' or 'sir' or is it something else entirely? I'm wondering if our word 'herra' is a direct loan from Scandinavian languages.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Ah, that explains it all. Puffins are wicked animals.
Ef þú getur lesið þetta þá kanntu kannski íslensku. Það getur verið að þú sért að vera sniðugur eins og viss herramaður sem ég nafngreini ekki. Eða að þú sért Færeyingur eða Nojari.

Mister, I don´t know the words origins I am afraid. But Icelandic is basically Norse as it was 1000 years ago according to written evidence from that time. So I think It has been used here for long.

Oh, I misunderstood you Kassiopeia. I think it might well be that you wonder right.

I just found out that the same word is "herre" in Swedish. Kind of strange that it's that way there and identical between Finnish and Icelandic, which lead me to wonder if it's actually another word entirely. Hence the question.

It's not as much as 2006.

This thread is supposed to scare more people
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

It's the same in danish so it probably has a common root. Guess that you got it through all those evil swedish immigrants you were pestered with some years ago.

Herr = german for mister as well Presumably it has a common origin in the russian steppes somewhere...

Interestingly, i've read some amusing sites that are generally YHWH proponent sites (ie, the 'name' of God-in-the-Judeochristian-sense) that claim that Herr derives from Her, which is somehow an alternate spelling or name or something of the Egyptian sun god. It wouldn't surprise me if this were true, though how it made it to the German language I have no idea (Alexander the Great, maybe?)
