Having gathered 150 k€ worth of wealth isn't bad, but it ain't gigantic either at midlife.

My parents are older than him but they never gathered that much.

The question is: what would you want to gather money for? You earn it to live of it not to stockpile it.

Question: is there public retirement care in Denmark? Coz if you keep it all for old age that explains a lot.

If I wanted to buy 37m² in my hometown, I'd need 150k€.

Having that kind of money isn't useless.

I happened to buy the flat I live in, in 1997. Since then, its value has quadrupled, from 500K to 2M.

OK. How is retirement financed in Denmark? Privately or publicly?

Both. Everyone's guaranteed a basic "People's Pension" from the government. If you have savings of your own, or a private pension scheme, you get only the basic amount, which I think is ~$20K before taxes, about half after taxes. If you have no other means of support than the People's Pension, you get additional benefits for housing, heating, medicine etc.

So you don't have to save millions of Danish crowns in order to plan your retirement. A toast to that

And especially if you're male, since statistically we die 6 years after retirement. Being a smoker practically eliminates all such worries.

                            Is that Danish black humour?

                            It sucks.

Retirement is up to 67 now from 65, and men have an average lifetime expectation of 73. Women get to hum along until 80. As a result, I have been advocating a mandatory female retirement age of 74 - or the introduction of some compensation scheme for males in general, which always seems to be a good conversation starter.
