  • Why no threads about treasonous New York Times revealing national secrets again?

'Cuz ya know, if we're gonna ***** about threads that don't exist but should, this one seems like it should be a little higher on the list than the latest news about a radio talk show host's erectile dysfunction...

As embarrassing as this failed thread?

Taking my cue from John Stewart, I fall back onto this thread's parodic nature to shield myself from your valid criticism.

It's fascinating how the administration and its supporters have targeted the New York Times because the same story also ran in the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal — and neither paper has gotten as much flak as the NYT has.

It smells of political opportunism. It's funny, too, in a sad sort of way because the WSJ is a reliably conservative paper while the NYT has an alleged liberal bias, *yet* the NYT apologized to its readers not too long ago for giving the adminstration a "free ride" in the buildup to the war in Iraq.

Regarding the story itself, does the adminstration and its backers really take the terrorist financiers for f*ck*ng idiots? Do they really think the world's top-notch financial types work exclusively for America? Furthermore, the justice and state departments have crowed repeatedly over the years about the actions they were taking against terrorists' financial pipelines.

The fact that the U.S. government has been targeting terrorists' financial networks has been one of the worst-kept secrets of the Global War on Terrorism (TM), thankyouverymuch.

The New York Times had the story first and broke it first over the objections of the Administration. I don't see why they wouldn't catch most of the blame.

So you think it's a good idea to give terrorist networks specific information on how we're attempting to track their funds? It's one thing to generally know that the United States is trying to monitor your financial transactions. It's another thing altogether to know how the United States is doing so and which financial institutions they are making use of in the process. Knowing the former doesn't give you an advantage in successfully slipping your money past American eyes. The latter most certainly does.

And I won't even go into the reprecussions this will have on any current or future intelligence operations with skittish foreign institutions who may not want their cooperation with American authorities to become common knowledge...

Maybe cuz the WSJ printed the same story only four hours later, and it was just as researched and investigated as the NYTs, meaning WSJ had the story in the works for some time.

And of course there's the fact that this story has been in the news regularly since 2001. Heck, the President himself even mentioned it during the campaign trail two years ago.

The New York Times had the story ready to go weeks before they actually printed it. They held off while the Administration was attempting to persuade them not to expose the program, which allowed the LA Times and WSJ to catch up, but it was always their scoop.

I'd love to see you find a quote from Bush mentioning details about this program, including the usage of SWIFT records to track the financial transactions of terrorists. Quotes to the effect of "We're tracking terrorist finances," don't count and it's disingenuous to try the pass off the latter as the equivalent of the former.

All three papers had the story and were holding it up due to the request of the administration. NYTimes then decided to break the story and told the others, who then also went to press. Once the NYTimes broke it there was no longer any reason for them to hold back.

As Drake pointed out, there is a big difference between knowing that they are trying to track your finances and knowing exactly how they will do so.
