Completely dreadful. The ref could have at least consulted with the lineman and the 4th official before deciding.

    • Well he shouldn't have gone to ground so Grossi could dive over him without being touched.
Precisely. Though I know that the Aussies had to do something given Italians attacking in their penalty area (and they certainly gave us a lot of scares), perhaps we shouldn't have done anything that could have even just looked like a foul.

By the way, I don't think Materazzi should've gotten the red card. So a bad game for both us...

True enough. I'd wager that labels like "gay" and "straight" get quite murky when you're banging a different alien species every week...

Jose for next US Manager! But games better end before dinner, cuz his mama will pull him off the field. Well, maybe his friend can take over then.

Can we just have Italy & Ukraine skip ahead to the PKs?

The commercials are fine, but that song is getting really old.

That was a very reckless tackle that could have injured a few players, including himself. As it were he brought down two men, one his own.

                      • this team's offense cannot beat anyone 1 v 1, especially when the other team is playing a tight compact defense. we saw it against cyprus, where frei scored in the 89th minute, israel, and france, weak teams playing defensively we were unable to beat. we need more quality upfront, and hopefully the academy of Payerne can start pumping out some strikers/ offensive midfielders. i heard that the next zidane plays for Berne-Young Boys (Pirmin Schwegler) but I dont know if he'll be ready for 2008 and he's only been capped 7 times for the U-21 team, and he has no goals.

there's also Julian Esteban, but he definitly wont be ready. he plays for Geneva- Servette (2nd division) and the U-20.

one of the local papers gave marco streller a 3. wtf? if thats a 3, what do you have to do to deserve a 1?

the radio is burning up in switzerland . . .

                        • How could the Swiss team misses all three penalties?

                          It's mindnumbing.

                          • it looked like they didnt practice them at all. they went up there and just choked them all away. frei shoulda been kept on to take the first one to show that its easy. I mean, the guy scored on a penalty in Istanbul. then after streller misses, you have a 20 year old take his first penalty kick ever in international competition (barnetta) who puts it off the bar (at least he kicked it with some force) and then you've got cabanas pass the ball to the keeper. after cabanas missed, it was all over.

i would have liked to see Gygax come on for Yakin, he scored an incredible goal against Italy in geneva.

Same here, except that my wife was asleep also and I missed the shoot out.
