“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

Except that Monaco has 40 times as less people and is not constructing 2 800 meter tall skyscrapers.

Don't forget, Michael Jackson lives there. He's bound to bring in some fans.

Seriously, how are folks like Osama Bin Laden going to react to the presence of a giant Disney-land park operating on the Holy Peninsula? I imagine it is onlky a matter of time befiore the "panties in a bunch" Islamic fundamentalists declare this development to be an affront to Allah and declare open season.

Just a few things that strike out to me:

                      1. None of these projects seem to be stand-alone, in other words, the entire development, everything, seems to be pre-planned by a large group of people and i'm not talking about the government directly.

                      2. It also seems this place is not entirely Dubai-owned, I just get the feeling that foreign billionaires came together to build this "Utopian City of the Future". I mean, a SPACEPORT? WTH? no no no no.. America is in on this in a big way!

Right now, I'm sitting in a hotel room on the 17th floor of one of those brand new buildings. Outside the window I can see the arabian sea and lots and lots of building sites. This city is freaking crazy. On the way in from the airport (which by the looks of it will double in size soon) I saw dozens and dozens of cranes and dozens of new skyscrapers sprouting out of the desert nothingness. I got a kick out of looking at the side of the road where they had planted grass and shubs. There is a builtin irrigation network so the plants don't dry out. good thing too, its over 40C right now!! I think when I go outside I'll just collapse!

Later today i'm going to check out the 'medical city' to see a dentist.

maybe after that I can check out that indoor ski-hill....insanity I tell you.

How can any of this be environmentally friendly??? Think of all the air conditioning they use!!!

But what the hell, its like being inside a simcity game

ps. the wireless internet is very fast but they block all sites or searchs to sex.

From what I have seen, I don't think I'll mind visiting here for 3 days....but there is NO way I would want to live here! Its all shopping malls, mansions, and desert! However, they do have many mcdonolds, pizzahuts, starbucks, and even cinnebons??? Not that I eat that food...its just slightly surreal to see them everywhere.

I was chatting to the cab driver on the way in from the airport and mentioned how bad the traffic was. It was complete gridlock...then he said the train system will be done by 2010. :

One last thing, from what I have seen so far most everyone working here is an expat. I don't think I have seen a native person working here yet. The receptionist at the hotel I'm at is thai... she said I should have picked Bangkok to vacation, and I think I agree.

                          Still, this place is unreal.

I'll make sure I stop over one day.

The place reminds me of some sort of futuristic city on a desert planet.

Which is just perfect for me.

You've even got (almost) slave labor and local nomadic fanatical desert tribes.

I wonder when they'll stop pumping sily oil and roll in the realy big bucks by mining spice all they would have to do si kill of those anoying sand worm thingis.
I'm not buying BtS until Firaxis impliments the "contiguous cultural border negates colony tax" concept.

Who wants to live in Dubai? It may be a nice place to visit once or twice, but live there? It's flat, it's hot, and it's dry.
