I'd imagine that seeing as how oil is only 6% of the economy of Dubai that they do have other local industries .

Especially the financial and banking center that is Dubai. Also the free zones are booming.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Dubai's own economy doesn't seem to be important in this boom, it's mostly foreign money and it is petrodollars. Saudi, UAE and other Arab money. Also, some online references say that the Iranians have invested over $200 billion.

The city doesn't seem self-sustainable to me, but it can do nicely as the hub of Arab luxury.

it's easy to see what is going on here

our universe has some sort of dimensional rift... someone is actually playing a game of Simcity, but this dimensional rift is causing the buildings and stuff to be built in our universe, in Dubai, rather than in the game...

clearly, that is what is going on here...

Dubi.. Vegas of the Middle East

Even with cheap near slave labor its the Building materials which are going through the roof now a days. The folks behind all this stuff shure think BIG thats for shure.

Nothing quite says nouveau vulgarity like a suite of artificial islands shaped like the world's landmasses.

I hear that some of the Dubai island developments are being snapped up by footballers.

                                How appropriate.
you say vulgarity like it's a bad thing.
