    speaking of wwii...

BTW Etchy, are you up for a Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday multiplayer game in the near future? The atrociously bad AI means that that game is made for mp, but I haven't found any folks willing to play with me

If the answer is "yes", go and answer my question about which time of the week would work for you in the subforum of Other Games.

      War is a team effort.

IMHO, the Allies could not have won WWII without the heroic efforts of the Brits, the Ruskies and the Yanks.

Never invade Russia. General Winter will kick your ass and besides, there isn't anything worthwhile to steal anyway!

I heard it has an improved AI - which is probably just propaganda. I don't have Doomsday yet, is it worth to get (if only for the interfact improvement)?

Oh, and Ehtcy's name is Echty, not Etchy!!1!

So this is the day the Finns joined their Nazi brethren in attacking Russia?

                      To Sir Ralph

Then it's more debatable. First let me sum it up by saying it's not a terribly big improvement. The "complete editor" which Paradox has advertised doesn't really do anything which you couldn't do with a text editor (I still create new events and stuff with notepad instead of the official editing program which comes with the game). There's a new sub-menu among with technology, diplomacy, production, statistics and main map: "intelligence", where you can (and usually must, if you're considering invasions, it's the only way you can see their troop strength) spy on other nations and try to steal their tech or assassinate their ministers (almost impossible to do). This is all paid by $, which drastically increases the functionality of the money, but it doesn't really affect the big picture of the game -- you don't really need to rely on intelligence after you've slowly planted the max number of 10 spies on your main AI enemy (I guess this could be more exciting in mp where the enemies actually try to purge your spies, thus it becomes a slow fight where the guy with the more cash available gets to spy on the other). The main thing I think is the fact that the game is programmed to last until the end of the year 1953. This means more techs (and thus more advanced divisions), more ministers, more military leaders, et cetera. But if you aren't interested in continuing the fight and only play for single player, I honestly see no need to buy the expansion on the top of the existing HoII.

I bought a legal copy for myself (had the vanilla) and as a graduation present for a RL buddy since I was (and still am) dreaming about multiplayer games. But there isn't that much new content apart from the new 5 game years of gameplay. OTOH, it's not expensive and it's fun to know that the dedicated developers get more kronor if you buy the game.

VJ: Thanks, much appreciated. I think I pick it up nonetheless, if only for the feature, that you don't have to readjust your sliders every f'ing day (I hope this announced improvement made it into the game). I'd also like to reward Paradox for ongoing good support - necessary expansion or not.

There's "auto-manage sliders" button but I haven't tested it out before.

hold on, i'll test it to see if it works and then edit to tell you if it does

edit: Yeah, it auto-locks the production sliders at the start of each day based on your prioritizing command you set up when you're turning the feature on in-game. here's the thing: supply production is prioritized over all other production automatically and you can't de-prioritize it. Apart from that, it works perfectly: if you have long production series of units and you don't want to lose gearing bonus, you can prioritise production instead of reinforcements, and it keeps it locked just 0.01 IC points above the requirement at the cost of other sliders (except consumer goods and supply production, which I just explained).

For it's global (after December 1941) war effort, it was vital to achieve a cease fire with SU, creating new borders near the Urals. Then they could've concentrated their forces on Mid-East, UK, North Africa or even India while keeping the Atlantic wall fortified in case of US invasion. With Stalin around, this cease fire was an unrealistic dream.
Perhaps the Nazis could´ve done better,
if they, instead of treating the inhabitants of the conquered eastern territories as subhumans which often could be exploited for slave labor,
had treated them as equals and had tried to win them for their cause. After all the sovjets weren´t really popular among many nations within the soviet union.
Would´ve gotten the foreign SS Divisions much more volunteers among these people.
