For three years, there have been confirmed reports of old "wmds" found in Iraq. Now. all of the sudden, it's news!!!!

            the WMD facts

500+ chemical weapons. Old. Degraded. Still hazardous.
But not a threat, and Saddam never had any of them in a position to threaten us. 500+ in-tact is wrong, most of the wepons found were not usable, none of them were manufactured or bought after 1991.

1500+ gallons of precursor chemicals known to be used in WMD type chemical weapons.
In a lab built after the fall of Saddam:

            from

"Boylan said the suspected lab was new, dating from some time after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003."

This means it was not Saddam's, but insurgency or Al-Q in Iraq's build.

1.77 tons of enriched uranium found.

these materials were not weapons grade, and were moved out to keep Al-Q in Iraq for obtaining them. they were not in any way related to any weapons program, they were employed in medical and industrial uses:
BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

regarding this news story of trucks moving suspicious stuff to the Syrian border here:

"About 380 tons of RDX and HMX, used in making such arms, were reported missing from the Al-Qaqaa weapons facility, though the Pentagon and an embedded NBC News correspondent said the facility appeared to have been emptied by the time U.S. forces got there."

So, RDX and HMX... sounds scary, must be for WMD's... right?

            from:
GlobalSecurity.org is the leading source for reliable news and security information, directed by John Pike

RDX used primarily for making plastic explosives, (read, not WMD's)

"HMX is used exclusively for military purposes to implode fissionable material in nuclear devices, as a component of plastic-bonded explosives, as a component of rocket propellant, and as a high explosive burster charge. The use of HMX as a propellant and in maximum-performance explosives is increasing."
these shells are not news. They are just a big pile of old degraded shells from before Gulf War I. It says so right here:

What the article doesn't say is if these 500 so called WMDs were all found in one place, or if they were leftovers scattered among various sites that somehow escaped distruction. I mean, even if Iraq were disarming, I'd imagine a few things here and there getting forgotten or overlooked in the paperwork.

All in all, it seems like Fox is trying to give the Republicans a boost. All timed to coincide with a Republican push to justify the invasion of Iraq. Apparently, now they're trying to focus on Iraq as an issue in the 2006 election (Talk about desperate ).

Let's be honest. If Saddam wasn't willing to use WMDs against coalition forces as they toppled his regime, when he had little to lose, do you really think he would have used them offensively?

I bet a whole bunch of people who drink the FOX kool-aid now think we found WMD in Iraq.

OMG! Some leftover shells from before Gulf War I!

Who cares? If we had found an active chemical (or even nuke IMO) weapons program, it still wouldn't have made the war necessary.

Yes, but not finding anything makes it even more unneccessary and makes Bush look even worse for claiming that there were WMDs.

Actually, I agree, at least wrt chemical weapons.

Nukes are IMO the real "WMDs" and I would've been more concerned (perhaps even concerned enough to support the war) if I'd believed that Iraq was anywhere near getting nukes. Maybe.

                          ...

As for who cares... anyone who cares about the government's casus belli. We can all play at being sophisticated by saying we don't really care what the government said to the ignorant masses to get us to go to war, but when it comes right down to it, I don't want Presidents taking the country to war on false pretexts: in this case that Iraq had WMDs and was a clear & present danger to the national security of the United States.

But we've been over this already.

                              Why would that be?

PS I don't really buy the contention that it was obviously false that Iraq had no WMDs. The intel was obviously wrong on that point but that's the way it pointed even in the Clinton admin.
