In other words, STFU unless you want to see Iran pull out of the NPT and begin unrestricted nuclear research and development.

I think that analogy is viable.

To STFU is never a solution. Of anything.

This IS their life, it is based around the sea and they've lived of it for generations. Why should some crazy-meddling-in-affairs-that-don't-concern-them people have anything to say about how these men live?
I changed my profession twice in my not even 50 years long life. Not the job, the profession. Fundamentally. And if need be, I will change it a third time, no problem. I don't see a reason why this would be too much to demand for once from an Icelandic fisherman.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

So you are saying that they have no right to hunt a marine specie who isn´t endangered and actually damages the cod and loðna (No idea of the englis word for this fish) stocks wich they make their living of fishing? Maybe I misunderstood you?

If the IAEC were saying they couldn't have reactors for civilian power, because the eco-fundies had taken over, they would have good grounds to withdraw.

And the STFU was aimed more at the policies being pushed in the IWC that will drive whaling nations out of the organization.

You're a very intelligent man, and you live in an economy that can provide you with a lot of opportunities.

Many in the fisheries are not going to be college prospects, and in Iceland they do not have a lot of industries to move to.

                • Perhaps I have been a bit unjust indeed. And the Icelanders, even though I deem their position still wrong, are not who make me really mad. It is the f'ing Japanese. Because they very well do have an alternative. You say "convince them". I am not in the position to convince countries. I can however choose to vote with my wallet. My current car is Japanese. My next one will be most certaily German. This may be not much, but take 100 with this attitude and it goes in the millions already. This doesn't work with Norway and Iceland, however. I think Norway can do without my 99 cents per week for fish conserves, and I don't remember to have bought anything from Iceland, ever.

                  • There would be a way to get rid of unwanted jobs within a generation.

Just stop accepting new trainees for this job nationwide.
This way the job slowly dies out until finally the last person working in this industry retires.

They could choose to join the EU. It pays farmers for not growing crop. Why would it not pay whalers for not killing whales? It is that stupid, no ****.

That is quite correct, most, not everyone that work at sea( except captains and the number one) do not have the slightest inclination to go to collage and learn something academic. Not everyone is cut for that and actually the world wouldn't work if some people wouldn't do the grassroot jobs. And some just plainly want to DO something, to see some results of their work, for example when the trawler returns home so full with fish that it is almost sinking. That is pretty diffrent from when some office bloke returns from home and starts up Eve online and begins to make (computer) money .
                        Not everyone are those types.
