I think it's rather refreshing having an input from people who actually know what they're on about.

If it weren't for them, this thread might as well be titled "Japan and Wailing".

So it really should be named "Northern Island Nations and Whaling"?

So says Mr. "it would be a different story if any whale species would be endangered, but since they aren't go ahead and eat 'em" about Mr. "What, you don't think whales kill fish? What about about killer whales and orcas, haven't you heard of them?"

Actually, I'm all for killing whales. I just don't think these Icelanders really know what they're talking about.

                  And you do?

Just because we don't share the same green/hippie/utopia views on whaling we don't know what we are talking about?

For your knowlegde the issues of whaling have been in discussion for as long as i can remember here and I've read articles and listened to ACTUAL scientists who actually know something of the matter for a long time.

My green/hippe/utopia views? Didn't I, just in my last post, talk about how I think it's okay for us to kill whales?

I don't give one iota of a **** about their intelligence. I don't care if they scream when we kill them. It wouldn't bother me in the least if they were hunted to extinction.

But I still think you don't know what you're talking about.

You can't tell a difference between a whale and a dolphin and yet you're calling people names and trying to cling on to your authority as an expert. My opinion as somebody who's been casually observing the population cycles of large mammals living in the world's oceans during the last ten years or so is that as long as there's an endangered species in the area where they'll be planning to increase whaling, it's better to play it safe and wait until the population grows back up from the endangered status to avoid any harm -- unintentional or intentional -- from the whalers to the species which should be protected. Orcas or "killer whales" as you put it could be hunted because they actually eat young whales (the origin of the term "killer whales" is actually a misinterpretation of their original 18th century name "whale killers", FYI) and thus reducing their population could increase the population of some of the endangered whale species locally.

And we all know Roddenberry was trying to portray a utopian society.

                              Therefore: Extinct whales = good.

We will agree to disagree on some matters concerning whaling then
