Don't install it too loose either - if you do that it will probably start howling.

Don't batteries have a limited life expectancy? The currently drained battery had been in there for a long time.

You can ruin it with heavy drainage and/or low liquid levels, but batteries has a long lifetime if treated properly.

I don't think that the alternator is in that bad shape - if that was the case, then you couldn't drive that much before the battery was dead.

I would do it the other way around - change battery and if you get in trouble again after a while, change the alternator.

I've had the same problems on two different cars, and you are not in doubt when the alternator is malfuntioning ( come to think of it - both were Fords - an Escort and a Capri )

Yep... their life expectancy is "as long as they will hold a charge"

All kidding aside... unless you live in cold weather city where the winters can be brutal on a car that sits outside, you really only need to replace a battery when it fails to hold a charge. Some batteries will last FAR longer than their specs.

I'll post a picture of my first car. This isn't the actual car, just a picture of a 78 Monza I found with a google search. Mine was preowned by a black guy I think. I he had small (but wide) tires on it. Dark tinted windows. Playboy insignia on a few things like the door locks. It looked pretty good, though it was a piece of ****.

batteries only last 3 or 4 years where I live.

The mechanic estimated that I could go about a hundred and fifty miles on a battery with no alternator, which is roughly thirty miles longer than the distance from my girlfriend's house to mine.

Yep - that is my point unless, of course, you put a battery charger on it during her visit.

The car keeps on moving so either you charge the battery by external source or the alternator works (well, ok, maybe not optimal).

                          just get a new battery.

That's always the first step. yes I know it doesn't get hot there like it does here (our batteries do not last long), but the battery is still the most likely reason. And checker autoparts can hook up this device to test the batter. I'm not sure how effective it is, but it seems to indicate a batter that cannot hold a charge.

To be honest, not much. But I do wish I'd taken it to a mechanic before I bought it.
