The first ship of the U.S. Navy’s newest class of aircraft carrier is likely to carry the name of the nation’s 38th president, if a measure passed June 16 by the U.S. Senate becomes law.
The amendment to the 2007 defense authorization bill calls for CVN 78, the first ship of the new CVN 21 class, to be named after Gerald Ford.
If approved by House-Senate conferees and signed into law, the name would perpetuate a string of naming aircraft carriers after recent Republican presidents. The two previous aircraft carriers have been named George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
Many veterans had written the secretary of the Navy to request that the next carrier be named America, after an earlier ship of that name was sunk last year in tests. The authority to name ships of the Navy is vested in the office of the secretary.

God I hate the current naming convention of the Carriers, especially with the way the Republicans have been pissing all over the traditional naming scheme.
(which isn't to say the Dems weren't as guilty, what with the Stennis and Truman, but still....)
