    Music people, I need your help!

    I'm doing a paper on U2's "City of Blinding Lights".

    Part of this involves diagramming the song and identifying chords used. I've googled around for tablature or sheet music and all of the stuff I've found vary wildly and all seem completely incorrect.

    For one, I think the song is in A flat. Anyone know if this is the case?

    The progression for the riff at 0:49 and in all of the verses SEEMS to be A -> E -> f#m ->A -> E -> D, but nothing I've found is remotely like that. Is everyone else listening to a different song than I am?

    I think, however, in the pre-chorus part ("And I miss you when you're not around") it sounds like it drops to C and alternates with D 2+2 bar structure, and the "Oh- you- are -so ..." part is alternating E and D.

    Does this make sense to anyone or am I just crazy?

    I can acquiesce requests if people don't have the song...

    As a sidenote, how come so many guitar tabs site key this in G#? That doesn't even ****ing exist.

      A flat and G# are the same key. You may want to direct that smiley at yourself...

        G# doesn't exist, but A flat is what G# would sound like if it did exist...

          No, G# is one of the theee sharps in an A major scale, one of the four sharps in an E major scale, etc.

              In the diatonic scale of G, F# is the only sharp: G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, and G

              Similarly, in the diatonic scale of Gb, F is the only natural note: Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Eb, F, and Gb

              Lower the notes in G by a semitone to get Gb...then raise them a semitone. The notes that were natural become sharp, the notes that were sharp become double sharp.

              As you can see, G# does not exist as a diatonic scale...

                What the **** are you on about? I played violin for 12 ****ing years, and during that time I played more G sharps than you could ****ing count.

                    You were playing A flats. People who don't understand music theory sometimes call them G#.

                          No, I wasn't.

                          Depending on what key the piece was written in the note would be denoted either G sharp or A flat.

                            G# simply doesn't make sense from a music theory point of view. Colloquially, it's come to mean the same as A flat. But in the system of music theory, it does not actually exist.
