    you can, but that makes things awkward on the bassist. much easier to tune down a step and play everything in second position.

      OK, so it makes a difference for scoring and reading music, and maybe playing it on a piano, but on a fretted, stringed, instrument (or even unfretted) when you're playing notes from memory rather than from the page, it doesn't matter what key it's in.

        I have certainly learned a lot about Music Appreciation in this thread, previously, this music teacher tried to teach a few city boys about humming real low and real deep

          not always true. things will get sticky when you get into secondary dominants and other bits of advanced theory. but you're right, though. for those that don't know, it won't make a difference. for those of us that do, it will. :shrugs:
