  • Old Testiment Satan

My Biblical scholastics aren't what they should be, so help me out here.

I remember Satan appears in Genesis, as the serpent. But after that, I don't recall his appearing in the Bible until the New Testiment, when he tries to tempt Jesus in the Wilderness.

Is here really that absent from the vast majority of the Old Testiment??

As if so, does anyone have theories on why?

I've never read it, but I don't think there's any association between Satan and the snake in the Old Testament. Really, the snake story is just an origin myth explaining why snakes don't have legs. Satan is mentioned occasionally in the Old Testament as sort of the guy who does God's dirty work, when God wants to make evil things happen to challenge humans, IIRC. The Hebrew word just means "adversary". Satan is not a major character in the Old Testament, he's just an agent of God (technically an angel, but angels in the Old Testament are just automata that do God's bidding).

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satan#In_the_Hebrew_Bible says basically what I said except in more detail and minus the rambling.

Perhaps a good way of summarizing it all is that in the Old Testament, Satan is not the devil but merely a devil's advocate.

I have read the Bible, so I can confidently state there is a definite assocation between the Serpent and Satan - they are one in the same.

What the Bible doesn't say is that his first name is Miroslav and he's a hockey player.

The serpent is just a critter tempting Eve. There's no expressed or implied connection between it and Satan.

Ezekiel 28 explains pretty much the fall of Lucifer.

The two sentences I gave to you; even if they dont directly refers to Lucifer or Satan. Are mostly believed to be about them.
