  • World Cup, Germany, 2006

Ahh,.. the smell of the turf, the roar of the crowd. The strategies, the mind games. The pride of nations gathered for a few short weeks of knock-down, drag-out tournament fighting. The skill and experience of mighty champions pitted against fledlings and minnows with nothing to lose.

Cover-defense, counter-attack and flanking... tearing away up the field only to have your legs cut away from behind. The agony of defeat. The final exhilaration of putting one away in the back of the net... and the sheer bloody incompetence of the partisan ref.

Yeees. Sports fans. For a few short weeks the world's best gather to tough it out for that moment of glory.

This week, the order of battle has been proclaimed at last. The pools are decided. Pool teams play in a round of each-against-each before moving on to knockout rounds, culminating in .....

    The World Cup Final!!!

So why is this worth worrying about I hear you ask?

Simple. You see, in 1996, The stinky Dutch-boys won gold at the Atlanta Olympics. Then in '98 they took out the Champions' Trophy and the World Cup. They are the only team so far to have ever held all three trophies at once.

The Kookaburras won Gold at the Athens Olympics. With victory at the Champions' Trophy earlier this year, we are just one step away from equalling Holland's acheivement and going down in history as the...
      greatest...

      the...

      world...

      ever...

      KNOWN!!!

Oh alright! If the Kookaburras don't win I'll eat an ice-hockey puck,.. or something

This was my thought too. This is such a pothead thread, it MUST be cricket.

                    That's a broad statement. I'm not a cricket fan.

We don't play cricket in the Netherlands. At least not at the level Terra mentioned. But we play some awesome hockey, much to the dismay of our friends down under

Sadly, there is no World Cup in Hurling.

But if the Canucks had the cojones for it? ...

                              Actually, you're right!

                              According to Wiki:
football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These games were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports often played by aristocrats.

So Ming, could you please change the title of the thread to "Football World Cup: Germany, 2006" ??

I don't want people to get the wrong idea and think this is a thread about luge, steeplechase or synchronised skating.
