I was starting Civ 2 when I was about 9, and came here when I was 12, I think.

But Civ 1 was a lot more complicated than the average game at the time.

It had health, too. You could get random effects like famine or plague if you didn't have granaries, or sewers, or something.

Of course, I was almost 30 when Civ came out...

Civ I had earthquakes if you lacked temples, fires for lack of aqueducts, triremes having a probability to sink while crossing the seas. Many complex things gone now, and replaced by other. My daughter's seven, and she pesters me to play her game from time to time (it's on settler and she keeps asking me questions but she does play).

The video is up on the website linked in the OP for free now.

                Very funny.

Introducing civilization games to your sons and daughters is the same as putting a bag of cocaine on their pillow. . Only kidding.

I've read the book now. His argument is very convincing, but he doesn't touch on the other side of the issue much. Take the average fourteen year old boy. He can navigate a new DVD player's menus without difficulty, but he hasn't heard of Charlemagne. So while kids are getting smarter, they're not nearly as knowledgeable in certain fields as they should be, and it's even possible that youth are regressing in terms of their knowledge of history, etc. It's because we live in a world where if you don't know who Charlemagne is, you can check out his wikipedia entry.

It's definitely a book worth reading.

I think it's roughly 49321 times more useful to know how to use a DVD player vs knowing of Charlemagne.

Fair enough. I agree. But it's fair to say that people probably should know about both.

Eh. I'd rather people know how to find a lot of information when they need it than be able to immediately recall less information.

I have to agree with Asher on this one.

That is what wikipedia is for.
