The only other thing that comes to mind is that you've got another 1.1 device connected to the same hub and it is preventing the switch. Some hubs seem to be like that.

I have the scanner and a digital camera, none of which have been connected for a long time now. But I did get the same message about the high speed device in a slow port when I last used them. As I mentioned, the problem started when I first installed the scanner back in August of 2005. Before then, the USB worked at the proper speed.

So just the external DVD burner is connected at this point. It is switched off right now, but every time I turn it on, the high/low speed message appears.

What puzzles me is that everything seems to indicate that the 2.0 is working, the bolded hub, the driver names, the BIOS entry, the system even tells me the DVD burner could work faster if connected to a different port - except it just won't work.

But I take some comfort from you telling me it seems to be a common problem. There has to be a solution, but it appears to be very evasive. I've done a fair amount of googling, but nothing has turned up.

        My advice:
Disconnect every external USB device from the PC.
Uninstall every USB device in Device Manager.
        Reboot.
Let Windows find and install your hardware and confirm that it is installed properly.
Try to connect a high speed device and see what it says.

        Good luck!
        What?

Then I have my ADSL Internet connection, which got installed around the same time as the scanner (after my previous ISP got taken over by another company). The Internet connection is always open. I haven't given much thought to that, as it is not connected via USB, but rather the slot next to the USB slot on the backside of the computer. I think it's called a LAN port, it has a symbol next to it that looks like 2 small desktops/monitors with another desktop/monitor on top of it.

I felt like a novice typing that. Well, I am a novice.

Yes, I think I will try that Richelieu. Have to go out now, but I will follow your suggestion tonight, and report back here on the result.

              format/reinstall *

*Please note that I am not advocating this straight away... It often seems to be the eventual solution though, for me. But then, I am far to impatient to take the time to fix it the other way

The above advice seems pretty sound, though

Well, I tried following Richelieu's suggestion - with the modification that USB devices have to be connected to the computer if one is to "uninstall" (remove) them using the device manager.

No dice. Still as slow as if it were USB 1.1. Still the same message of "This device can operate faster, if.."

I plugged in the scanner, the camera and the DVD burner and removed them one by one in Device manager, diconnected them, rebooted the computer, connected the burner and got the message, same as usual. Shortly thereafter came a message that the burner had been detected and properly installed. Tried to burn a DVD. Slooow..

I'm at my wits' end here. If anyone can help me get this thing working, I'll be most grateful.
