Big oil can kill it by spending more on exploration, finding more reserves, and pumping more oil. Then the oil supply grows quicker than demand, and the oil price crashes, making those bio, solar, wind unprofitable again.

Chevron has already dropped the Texaco part. It is not coming back.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

Wiki says: "The EU plans to add 5% bioethanol to Europe's petrol by 2010. For the UK alone the production would require 12,000 square kilometres of the country's 65,000 square kilometres of arable land assuming that no biofuels are created using waste produces from other agriculture."
How do I know switching from fossil to biofuel will not require an expansion of arable land unparalleled in history?DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

So GM crops can multiply yield by a factor of 5?DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

For the short term, we do need more fuel supplies. If doesn't matter if it comes from Lancer's tuba-tuba seeds, from Brazil's sugar-powered ethonol, or from cow poop. (I saw a news story recently on an experimental project which turns cow poop into a fuel usable in the experimenters' hybrid car. It gets 40 m.p.g.)
We also need more refineries. Right now, the lack of refining capacity is what is driving prices up.
Was it Sloww who added more fuel-efficient cars. The hybrid breakthru is a good thing
but it's not a long-term remedy.
Over the long term, we need a totally different non-global warming solution. I vote for fusion, with its electricity being used to run cars. But tragically, the first commercial fussion plant isn't expected before 2020.Last edited by Zkribbler; June 4, 2006, 11:29.

If the oil price crashes now, it would kill the entire emerging solar, wind, and alternative energy industry. Very bad in my opinion.

Add a surcharge to the price of a car based on its fuel efficiency. The less the mpg the greater the charge. Make it big, then use the $ to eliminate the income tax. BIG. Use some of the money to fund alternative fuels and technologies.

Why can't we just get our oil from teenagers, like everyone else?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
