  • Randians

I hung out with a Randian this last week. I didn't realise how counter Rands philosophy is with my own. While we got along fine, I found it a bit stressful (he prefered to talk about Randism, girls, and old video games)..

We discussed philosophy a lot, I think at the end he was moving a bit away from pure capitalism (at least for the police and regulatory force) (but admitedly, he was willing to consider the need of the regulation of industry to protect the environment to begin with..).

I must admit that I find the personal ethics of Randism to be more disagreeable than the state ethics (but then I like thinking about Utopias).

I am wondering what part of the way the US has behaved this last century is the result of a Randian influence.

Well I agree on some policy issues, as in capitalism is far preferable to socialism, and others. However that they seem to have adopted social darwinism as a moral system and think greed and selfishness are virtues and hate charity... well I definitely can't agree with that.

I think capitalism is a successful system precisely because there are many unselfish, generous, charitible folks out there that help out those who have been left behind. Take them away and the system suddenly becomes less attractive.

So while I agree with many policy ideas of Rand, I can never agree with a Darwinian/Nietzschian morality.

I find the argument and philosophy that Rand poses as simplistic. On the other hand I think her examples of rampant socialism and the deletrious effects fairly on the mark.

Her nightmare vision of a world embracing solcialism seems more accurate than her idealistic and cartoonish characters.

Objectivism is completely moronic and easily refuted. Anyone who believes in it knows nothing about philosophy and is probably a cretin.
