Am I the only one in the US to believe we have bigger problems more deserving our immediate attention?
(I'm in favor of any coin with JFK on it )
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

Fer Crissakes you guys! There's nothing more annoying than visiting your inlaws in Minnesota, going to the "Target" (they don't have Canadian Tire down there for some reason) and digging out a wad of Ones to buy something, and you can't tell what the bills are because they're all the same colour and design. It's time the US got into the 21st century, money wise!
Part of the reason is that changing the color of the US bills is culturally impossible, green has come to sybolize money.

yeah, but walking around with $20 in coins in your pockets will make your pants fall down and really put a crimp on your stealthy ninja skills!!
I was talking about $1 bills vs. coins, I have no problem with higher denominations being bills.
Last time I was in Romania, the largest coin was 500 lei ($.03 or so). Really no one used coins at all anymore, though this had more to do with hyperinflation making all coins obsolete rather than anything else. Still, the new Romanian money was much more convienient than coins, and since the bills are made of plastic or some plastic-like substance, it's a lot harder to wrinkle or tear them.

A good strat to get robbed or pick-pocketted for sure.
The better way is to do it the other way around.

Why the heck would you want to get rid of dollar bills for coins? Coins weigh a lot and cost WAY more to produce. Heck, a penny costs more than 1¢ to produce nowadays thanks to the cost of copper and such...
If you can't tell the difference between a $1 and a $5 bill, then get the $#%$# out of the country and go to some country where illiteracy is considered acceptable, unless you're blind ... which admittedly sucks, though you can buy a reader that'll say the denomination, or file your bills in the appropriate pockets in a multipocket billfold, or both...
I have no problem creating a dollar coin, as indeed if you use vending machines a lot that's all well and good, but for 90% of americans, the bill is the way to go.
Oh, and cashless ftw

You guys are missing the real issue. What happens to strippers if the one dollar bill is put out to pasture? Coins don't look to good in G-Strings and I don't know too many people willing to part with fives that easy.

Exactly. That's the clincher.
What do Euro strippers do? I wonder.
