This has to be a joke: Proposed Iranian law requires minoriities to wear colour bands
Because the Nazis had a lot more than 12 journalists in prison. And they suppressed a lot more than 81 publications in two years.
So again what was the protest about?
"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "
-Bokonon
But to sit here and say that we can trust what official news comes out of a country that tortures and murders journalists who piss the beards off is... really rather foolish.
No, I said that we can trust certain things that come out of that country. Nazi German press didn't dispute that the sky was blue, there was a war on, etc. Some things Iran would not have the capability to censor press coverage of. A law with huge effects passed by parliament is one of them.

Except for lotm. That's what Gepap quoted:
"One wouldnt have to listen to Iranian exiles for events in Iran, IF Iran had a free press. Which it does not."
That's the argument that Gepap was criticizing. ******.
Exactly what do you know about society in Iran, and where exactly other than your ass are you pulling your empiracism from?
Evidentally, much more than you.
You do realize that the article doesn't mention a sentence, right? Only that that were before a court. You also realize that the article mentions that 12 journalists are currently in jails? If Iran locked up everyone who wrote things to this effect, that would be a far larger number. No totalitarian society has only 12 journalists imprisoned.
1. Iran clearly does not have a free press.
2. Legislation that is actually passed, would of course still be public knowledge.
3. Whether discussions within the Majlis are public knowledge, Im not sure.
4. What the govt may be considering to put before the Majlis is probably difficult to know, and more so because of the absence of a free press.
5. The National Post was probably not justiffied in relying on exiles for what was actually passed, without checking.
6. Nonetheless, given the state of press freedom in Iran, exiles will have to continue to be an important source of information.
7. Amir Taheri continues to assert that there are elements in the regime considering this. There ARE legal distinctions impacting non-muslims in Iran.
8. Iranian exiles have been the source of info on the Iranian nuclear program, info that was later confirmed by the IAEA. It would be a dreadful mistake to write them off as sources of info.

I fixed the link. What percentage of al Qa'ida members are Iranian? Any evidence, even fabricated Zionist evidence, that any of the people holding the Jewish-American reporter in Pakistan were Iranian?
Iran is a major supporter of al Qa'ida.
While there is no evidence of direct Iranian support of the killing of the Jewish-American reporter, there is plenty of evidence of Iran supporting anti-Israel terrorists, such as Hezbollah. Iran is officially a "terrorist" nation.
Also, there is this interesting bit about that comes from Iran in recent months: The Holocaust never happened.
Sorry if anyone already argued this: but it's a safe bet that should a law like this ever get passed, it won't be kept secret, since a law that's not known publicly is pretty pointless. The whole concept of a secret law is an oxymoron and the National Post should have realised that.

Secret weapons don't need to be publicly known in order to be effective. Laws do.

someones not up on their movies (or their deterrence theory, I might add)
Dr. Strangelove: Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*! Why didn't you tell the world, EH?
Ambassador de Sadesky: It was to be announced at the Party Congress on Monday. As you know, the Premier loves surprises.
but at least it led to the following
General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

(but deterrence policy is something else than a weapon, strictly speaking )

Wow, you totally missed the reference. You're a silly furriner, so you're excused.
