look. Lets say you get a decent budget machine for $500 (and it takes a fair amount of shopping around to get that, and youve got to compromise - i can easily see someone whos only interested in surfing and word processing wanting something more) Add a high def TV, for what, $500? plus an Xbox for $400. Thats $1400. You really cant buy a PC that will play Oblivion well for $1400?

You realize that's the same Desktop homepage as CNET (both are the same company), and the #1 "Editors Top Products" is an Overdrive PC Torque SLI, which, if you go to their website (http://www.overdrivepc.com/gaming/sli.htm) is $3994.

Speak to a computer gamer, who into the cutting edge graphics (and probably plays FPS games) and they'll indicate that $2000 is mid tier for a gaming system.

No (unless you get a great deal on parts and make it yourself). You may be able to play Oblivion on low/mid settings, but probably not on the mid/high settings. At least not well (as in 20-30 fps - which I consider well enough, I know FPS folk who think that is an utter abomination).

I play on high settings (since graphics are one of the big selling points of Oblivion, you naturally want the highest you can get) and get around 20 fps outside.

I guess im not surprised that computer gamers who are into cutting edge graphics and FPS, use terms differently than most of the market.

You have to compare apples to apples. XBox 360 is designed to be graphically equivalent to the expensive gaming systems. That is its major selling point (same with the PS3).

It is no coincidence that most of the games currently on the X360 or coming out in the 2nd launch of games are FPS or sports games.

So is this a loss-leader, and they're hoping to recoup the cash on over-priced Mario games?
Or are they just paring their profit margins to almost 0, and then hoping to gain a vast market share with which to foist other products with huge profit margins onto the gaming public?

Nintendo is the only one company of the three that has been selling their console at a profit. The loss leaders are/were the Xbox, the 360 and the PS2/3, who sell at a loss and hope to make it back through accessories/game sales.

Yet they're selling theirs far cheaper?

Either they've got an army of street urchins in sweat shops churning out processor chips, or they're trying really hard to convince buyers that it's an inferior product.

They are not adding on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray discs, which adds the cost of more parts, and licensing fees, for one. Nintendo's goal with their console is not to improve the graphics, which are really only worthwhile if you have an HDTV, but to create a new way of playing games. I was playing some boxing game on a 360 yesterday. Yes, when I first looked at it, I thought the graphics were nice - albeit not "next-gen-WTFOMFG!!" better than the original Xbox - but I didn't really pay attention to them for long. If that same game was made for the Wii, with graphics closer to the GameCube (although the Wii will be capable of producing better graphics), and the boxing moves implemented through the motion-sensing Wiimote, I wouldn't give a damn. The nunchuk in one hand, the Wiimote in the other, allowing you to really box your opponent, sense your dodge to the left or right.

Fantastic possibilities. And Nintendo says there is still more to be revealed about the Wii and its hardware.

Its cheap because they put low-end hardware in the Wii. It has about the same power as the Xbox 1.

How many people classified as "hesitant/sceptical" buyers of consoles in this very thread said they may buy a wii?

                              • Killing the Wii is easy. MS, Sony just have to sell some sort of motion detector accessory along with a suitable controller.

And the PC too, I honestly don't know why it has taken so long for this feature to come out; I'm glad Wii has woken everyone up.
