My friend and I have decided we want to do the beach thing. After all the running around, we'll want to relax. So we think we're going to decide between Barcelona, the French Riviera, the Italian Riviera, and the Croatian coast. How expensive are some of these places going to be? I won't have a lot of money to spare, that's why I'm kind of nervous about Barcelona. And if transportation in Croatia is tricky, that could be a problem. We want some place where transportation is cheap and relatively quick.

My personal choice would be London, but that would be because I'd rather stay at home than go off to some weird foreign place (Wales is bad enough - and that's University, not holiday). But I find the best area in Germany would be anywhere in the southwest. And then there's Austria, and Switzerland on top of that. Just don't go near Greece... that place is full of weird people with names like Giannopoulos

Croatian coast ftw. Croatia is far cheaper than the others, it's not overcrowded with tourists. Though I didn't go there myself, the friends that did never had any complaints about the transportaton's reliability

For Croatia, you need to hook up with VetLegion, John. He'll clue you in.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. I was stationed in Deutchland in 1978-1979, in a place called Crailsheim, about 40 kliks from Ansbach on Route 14.

I hope one day to go back and visit, I had met some locals and was befriended by them.

I loved the people, countryside and food.

It is is alos where I came to appreciate the little bit of Greek Culture, acquired some tastes and a very limited understanding of the language.

Its also where I got in trouble with the U S Army over a delicious black licorice tastiung, opium based metaxa, called Ouzo.

Well, back to for Germany and Greece

                            With regard to Prague...

What are Prague and Vienna like? Why would those two be better than Rome, Paris, Barcelona, or Istanbul? And tell me more about the Croatian coast. Are the beaches swimming-beaches or just pretty-viewing beaches?
Vienna is nothing special. Of the couple of handfuls of cities I visited in Europe, Prague stood out as being unique. It isn't that there was anything identifiable as different in Prague, but all sorts of little things added up to make you feel like it was a city in a separate reality.

This was almost 10 years ago and life was still tough for post-communist Praguers. Maybe things have changed since then.
