How much time do you have?

I'd do the Africa option. Because, I mean it's Africa! How cool is that. You could for instance go on one of those overland truck tours through SA, Botswana and Namibia.

Or. what about Italy & Croatia? You can do the culture and history stuff in Italy and then ferry over to the Croatian islands for some beers and relaxation. Though I'm sure there are culture to be seen in Croatia too (eg Dubrovnik), but chances are you'll overdose on it in Rome.

Depending on what you're looking for, I'd advise Mali. You can get to see Tombouctou and Djenné, as well as the Dogon country (these are the three main touristy spots, which are for a "history" kind of tourists).

However, the place is very unaccessible if you don't speak fluent Bambara or French

Or South Africa/Botswana. English spoken, safaris are easy, and you've got the Sun City if you want to balance that with something more first-world-y.

My brother spent some time picking up the local language (a couple of months) and did just fine...

Who do you think was going to tattle on the South's thousands of little tyrants? Other Southerners. Most of whom wanted your asses gone long before it happened. Especially because the US and the NV/VC were responsible for about equally as many civilian deaths, while the ARVN was responsible for 2-3 times as many. I think it was probably a tossup whether the average paddy farmer in the south hated the US or the ARVN forces more.

Given that the commies had been in power in the North for 20 years without committing genocide and that the Khmer Rouge had always been weaker than the NVA and in fact was already resentful of them (sowing the seeds for the series of border conflicts leading up to 1979) this is an interesting claim. Especially because the Khmer had only seized Phnom Penh 13 days earlier, and hadn't yet had time to commit many mass killings...

This humanitarian wouldn't have chosen to continue to fight a losing war, killing a couple of million of the people I was supposed to be helping in the process.
