Cheer up, have a steak. It's especially good if you grill it with hickory. Remember, these animals exist only to be killed and eaten...and before you go asking us how we'd feel if people only existed for that purpose, Ludd, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason Utah's still in the union. If there's a nuclear war, the U.S. will have a strategic reserve of substance-free, pre-salted meat, and with an ideal stud-to-heifer ratio for breeding purposes too.

President Bush never had the support of the Democrats except for brief period after 9/11. His recent drop in a polls coincides with his loss of support among independents and Republicans who voted for him in the last election. In other words, he is pissing off his base.

Now how has he done that? It began with the betrayal of Harriet Miers.

It continued with his pandering to the left on energy by focusing on alternative fuels rather than drilling or nuclear power, or building more refineries. The problem we are in is primarily caused by the left opposing, at every opportunity, drilling, or nuclear power, or refineries. Rather than hammering the left, he pandered to them.

It continued further with his so-called "immigration policy." With Americans 80% against illegal immigration, Bush seems to want to roll over play dead and grant amnesty to the illegals.

It continued with the so-called "ports deal." Rather than the defend the Dubai company and one of the few Arab allies that we have, he caved. His actions in this regard were despicable.

More and more and more this George Bush is looking like his father. The reason his father fell from favor with the American people is that he caved to the Democrats on issue of taxes and betrayed his base. This George Bush is doing the same by backstabbing his own party by pandering again and again and again to the left and making us feel betrayed. So long as he continues to act like a spineless weakling, his standing in the polls will continue to decline.

I think high oil prices are good, because it will force oil companies, the state, and common people, to look for alternatives.

Wow, Ned. I never imagined. Wow.

I agree with you, tangentally, on two points. Democratic opposition to both nuclear power and the Dubai deal really pisses me off. Seems like they took up these positions just to show that they were different from the Republicans.

What does it say about the average Canadian's intelligence?

Canadians are in no position to be critical of American voters. We elected our own moron repeatedly.

I'll leave that one alone because I don't think Republicans were really going to vote her in, but I'm not sure.

None of this really matters because none of those answers are going to have any real effect on the supply of energy for years.

This is all Bush, in fact a lot of Republicans are having a lot of trouble with immigration policies. Part of the conservative base in some states are these immigrants. In fact it's pretty interesting that major immigrant forces in Texas and Florida vote/d for the Bushs.

It continued with the so-called "ports deal." Rather than the defend the Dubai company and one of the few Arab allies that we have, he caved. His actions in this regard were despicable.
I thought security was the domain of the Republicans? I know a lot of conservatives were upset over this and I can't imagine what would have happened if a Democrat was in charge of a deal like that.

I wouldn't call it backstabbing. I think more and more Republicans are realizing that Bush isn't the party. The party has been following Bush's lead instead of the other way around and now that Congresscritters can't expect victory by supporting Bush they're finally establishing themselves as independent of him. It'll be interesting to see how the Republicans run for election considering Bush's aproval rating. Even if the Republicans still have control of one or both houses they may not be as amenable as Bush would like.

The sad thing is even with approval ratings in the 20s% for congress in general, they'll still have 90% reelection rate. Yay, "democracy!"

The reason, as far as I can tell, is that (just about) nobody pays attention to their congressional representatives. Hell, *I* don't even really pay much attention. So people have a general impression that Congresspeople suck, but when it comes to election day they don't know jack about the issues, the challenger(s), etc, and they give up and vote for the name they know. Pathetic, but true.

Last time 'round I at least did some quick research in the days leading up to the election and tried to make informed choices. Even so, I can't actually remember if I voted for Lieberman, Dodd, or their challengers. Blah.
