That's hyperbole. But as Aggie's link demonstrates. Most Chinese are only taught differing opinions and ideas by foreign teachers. Even then the foreign teacher must be careful to watch how he presents himself and his ideas and are restricted from teaching in certain places, giving the impression that one place is more truthier than the other.

His point is an entirely sound one. People think that the Chinese Communist Party has some sort of ironclad grip over academia. It doesn't.

There are rules and restrictions, but they are not enforced properly and tend to be ignored. His point is that we get the wrong idea if we imagine that Chinese Universities are bastions of totalitarianism.

American Universities are just as bad in certain respects. Try being a professor who criticises Israel now, or one who crticized feminism and the sexual abuse hysteria ten years ago.

If I had to count the number of professors at my university that have openly criticized Israel in class discussions I'd have to use all my fingers and more than a few toes. Tell me you're joking.
          Unbelievable!

What you miss is that this is a foreign teacher. I saw this a lot in China from certain foreigners. They believed that they were the same as the Chinese and equated their experiences as the same as a local citizens. We called them idiots.

The teacher was able to teach in his manner and to get the responses from the students he did because he was a foreigner. Even then there are restrictions. A Chinese teacher would not be permitted to teach a class in this manner. He likely get complaints from his students and be fired or worse.

What you can get from the article is that many students are eager to learn about foreign ideas. How much of this is just curiosity of foreigners and their ideas or a true interest in political thought is uncertain.

This shows complete ignorance of Chinese universities and some of American universities as well. There really is no comparison in this regard. Tingkai will probably show up soon to further prove this.

And they will hire more foreigners. It is inevitable. Why must you be such a pessimist?

Really? If you say the wrong thing in some Western Universities you will get in trouble. Sure it's less restrictive, but in some ways it is worse, since the censorship is not out in the open for everyone to see.

I've seen it happen over and over again.

What could the Anti-Defamation League and other groups do about it? Even if they have "connections" in campus administration they wouldn't get away with ****canning experienced professors just for holding political views which are, after all, already virtually ubiquitous on most American campuses.

What precisely do you mean by "difficult"? Firing? Demotion or refusal to promote? Pay cuts? Hampering efforts to publish? If you just mean getting some public or private criticism, nearly all professors can take it in stride and many would relish it.

Just commies being commies . As has always happened in the past , everyone will fear the commies when then seem powerful , and then will point and laugh when they implode ( as they inevitably do ) . And yes , China sucks .

I'm not being pessimistic. I'm being realistic. The CCP isn't worried about a few foreign teachers changing the ideas that they have brainwashed into their children since they began school. I find it odd that you claim to know so much about what goes on in China, despite never being there. I will give China credit for exporting a false image that anti-american liberals will just eat up.

Then please cite examples of all these acts of unseen censorship.

China is destined to take over the world through mostly peacefull economic means and it is *ENTIRLEY* the U.S.'s fault.
