This isn't really animatioon is it? I get the impression that they took live action film and then "cartoon-ized" it. I think I'd prefer to see this movie in true live action, but i'll hold my final judgement until I see it in a theater."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

No, it's a gimmick, if you see more than 1 or 2 more movies like this, then it's not a gimmick.
Its a gimmick when used in a way like the Citizen's Bank commercials that used it."I predict your ignore will rival Ben's" - Ecofarm

So they will have the true live action filmed. Up to them to release it though.be free

Richard Linklater uses this technique as an artistic tool to help tell the story, but it is not meant to be the center of audience attention.

I could care less who made it, it's still a gimmick.

[q=Tuberski]If the story could be told with normal actors without the animation, it's a gimmick. Period.[/q]
Nah, you are wrong.
It's like saying that animated films in general (like "The Incredibles") are gimmicks.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The story seems alright, but I'll wait to watch the movie.
Actually, I'll hold off on calling it a gimmick right now. If the animation is actually used to further the story then I will agree.
But, if it's just animated to make it look animated, it's still a gimmick.

i just dont get why it has to be this style if they used live actors anyway."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

Do you consider 'special effects' to be a gimmick?
You sure do have quite a strange idea of what is a gimmick.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Special effects have a purpose in most movies.
As I said, maybe somewhere in the movie, the use of animation will make sense. Like in The Wizrd of Oz, with the balck and white begin and end.
Tell me a reason a live acted movie needs to be animated. If there is no reason for it, other than the animation itself, it's a gimmick.

No, if they use live actors anyway and then animate them for no apparent reason that is a gimmick.
Um... how about to tell a story in a different fashion? My, ever little artistic decision must be a 'gimmick' to you. "Memento" was a 'gimmick' flick? They could have told it in regular time fashion, but they decided to cut among different time periods, telling it backwards for a good portion.

As an artistic decision. The story is about drug use and interesting psychological issues resulting. What can possible be a better story to use this rotoscoping to 'trick' your mind into one second thinking it is animation, another live action?
From wiki:
[q=wikipedia]The theme of construction of reality in consciousness is central to the novel. The most obvious example is the dilemma of the main character who simultaneously assumes two identities and often loses track of reality. Also, many of the characters excessively taunt each other, and rendered paranoid by drug use, understand the world through conspiracy theories. Because of the surreal, almost absurdist style of the novel, readers are left wondering if their own perceptions reflect reality or paranoia.[/q]
The creators of the film used a medium to showcase the underlying theme of the story in a visual sense.Last edited by Imran Siddiqui; May 6, 2006, 16:06.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Memento, was told from the beginning and the end and played to the middle of the story. The way it played was very important, if you play it beginning to end, it would be a so-so movie.

This is actually a much better response than "it's not a gimmick"
