The real danger is that this woman is probably posing as a friend to take advantage of your mother. Something quite similar happened to my great aunt. A man and woman "befriended" her and eventually cut her off from all friends and family. She changed her will to leave everything to them.
She died of what appears to be mild malnutrition and other symptoms of the kind seen in the worst nursing home fraud cases. The will was contested by my aunt and another close relative on the basis of competency, to no avail (she had no children of her own). The FL AG office was unable to do anything to the scammers. This was at least the third time the man and woman had done this.
Bastards like this should be strung up.(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!

I talked to my mother, and got a few more details about this woman and her claims.
Her first name is Sylvia. My mother couldn't recall her last name, but Sylvia is not a very common name and considering how few female casualties there were in the Gulf War, if there's any lists of female casualties it should be easy to tell if she's on it or not.
She says that she was in a vehicle when she got the shrapnel in her arm. This is how my mother remembers the story she was told - Sylvia was riding in a vehicle of some sort when a small car came up alongside them, and then she saw something coming towards them from the car and the metal started flying around inside the vehicle.
She wasn't clear whether Sylvia meant it was a car bomb or that a grenade or some explosive was thrown out of the car at theirs. My mother might be misremembering some of it, but maybe these details would help.
Another reason why I doubt this woman's story - just the other day she said she just found out she has lung cancer, and brought over x-rays to show my mother. My mother has lung cancer, and I think it's an odd coincedence that Sylvia would be diagnosed with it within days of meeting my mother.
I'm going to go look for news reports about a Sylvia injured in the Gulf War, if anyone else can help find out if this is true or not, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Then call that unit representing yourself as someone whom you may consider hiring, I do it here with all the Marines and Navy getting out.
If pressed, tell them you were thinking of having someone help take care of your mother.
