  • Need help exposing phony veteran

My mother, who is in her 70s, told me recently she made a new friend that she's spending a lot of time with lately. I was happy to hear this at first, because she hasn't made many new friends since a move a couple of years ago, but then she told me some things about this friend that make me suspicious.

This woman says she served during the Gulf War, which is perfectly believable. She also had another couple of claims that made me start to doubt her. First, she claims to suffer from "Gulf War Syndrome" and my mother says that this woman claims to still cough up oil sometimes from the well fires. From what I've read there's very little evidence that Gulf War Syndrome cases have a common cause and have anything to do with the conflict, and secondly the claim to be coughing up oil 15 years after exposure to it seems weird too.

The second claim, which I think SHOULD be pretty easy to verify as false, is that she was hit by shrapnel and still has shrapnel in her. She claims to be US Army, and I saw that there were only 466 non-mortal injuries during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and though I couldn't find the casualties for this conflict broken down by demographics, in other conflicts (like the current one), females make up a tiny percentage of combat injuries. I wouldn't be surprised if there were less than a half-dozen female soldiers injured in that conflict altogether, and of those I find it unlikely that some would still have shrapnel in them, unless it was lodged very near a vital organ.

I'm pretty sure we're just dealing with a habitual liar here, but I'd like my Mom to be informed in case she starts trying to borrow money or otherwise exploit my mother. Can anyone help me find the statistics I'd need to verify/disprove this?

The woman who my mother has been talking about is much younger than my mother - about the right age to have fought in Desert Storm. I don't think she'll have senility for an excuse.

My mother is not senile, but she's always been very trusting and helpful, which is why I'm worried about her making friends with a habitual liar.

Ah, I just assumed she made a friend her age. But a seventy or eighty year old wouldn't really be doing much in Desert Storm.

Ask her to see the oil she coughs up...

Question 1 - Name and unit (is she smart enough to know which units served in Desert Shield/Storm - you should be able to check).

Question 2 - Does she fly? If so can she walk through a metal detector without setting it off? Shrapnel is usually steel although a small piece probably wouldn't set a detector off.

Question 3 - Has she pursued any kind of legal action for "Gulf War Syndrome"? You should be able to check whether the law firm she claims represented her was actually involved in such an action and maybe whether the court records list her as a plaintiff.

Name and unit is probably enough as it is. The odds are good that anyone injured in the first Gulf War would have been mentioned in a newspaper in their hometown, and probably also in the Base newspaper. You could also check with her unit commander, who might well still be in the Army, or with the current Base commander for her unit. The Army certainly has an interest in preventing fraudulent claims being made about it, and should be willing to help you out.

Coughing up oil is a pretty big red flag, though ... I don't think anyone coughs up oil anymore, and have to doubt anyone coughed up oil for more than a year or so after the war. Enough oil to still be there after a year (not to mention fifteen) would have been enough to be fatal...

Nobody ever coughed up any oil. She may have been exposed to toxic smoke at worst but she has no crude oil unless she drank it. Even then, it would have long cleared from her system. Liar.

Tonight I'll ask my mother what this woman's name is, my mother isn't likely to ask her a lot of questions about what unit she was in, etc., but maybe she's already volunteered some information.

Does anyone know how many female casualties the US Army had in the Gulf War, if any? This might be pretty easy to debunk without her name, if there's only 3 or 4 women who were injured in combat, it should be possible to look up news stories about them and verify whether or not they were hit by shrapnel.

Well, I've found that 16 American women were killed during the Gulf War. I still haven't found out how many were injured.

that many? maybe it was that barracks that got hit in Saudi Arabia.

Most women were no where near the action.

Everything else sounds OK except coughing oil. WTF is that all about? Is that even possible?

Maybe she's just into telling stories like that. I wouldn't be worried about it. Everyone lies. Except if she tries to, like you said, borrow money or something like that.

Other than that, I don't know what the big deal is.

some maybe aren't outright lies (though they probably are). Some people just say this **** to get sympathy. She's a sympathy whore. Women are more prone to do this. But men sometimes do this as well.

But I'm always suspicious when young people befriend older people. Makes me think they wish to be written into their will or something. Or just suck money from them before they die. Not that I'm saying older people aren't worth talking to. They have a lifetime of experience behind them. I'm sure they have interesting stories and advice.

I have known plenty of habitual liars and I know that some of them are trustworthy when it comes to things like not stealing from you or taking advantage of old ladies, you just can't believe a word they say. It's definitely possible that the woman I'm discussing here poses no threat to my mother and is only telling stories. It's also possible that she's not lying about her service and only guilty of exaggeration (regarding the 'coughing up oil' thing). But there's also the chance that she's a possible threat to my mother, and if she's lying I think that chance is bigger than usual. I'm also suspicious of her because of how fast she's making friends with my mother - my mom says they stayed up all night talking, and that they plan on going to some of the local casinos together. It seems odd to me that this woman would be so quick to make friends with a woman 20-30 years her senior who seems like she'd have very little in common with.

The part about having shrapnel in her really caught my attention, because I remember well how few casualties there were on the USA side during that conflict - over 200,000 soldiers were there and less than 200 were killed, and less than 500 were injured, and that's including males. A female who was wounded in Desert Storm would be even rare - her claims are less probable than if she claimed to have been struck by lightning.

I just want to let my mother know that she should be careful about trusting this person if they are lying, which seems likely.
