Could be a slipped disc pinching a nerve, or maybe an old injury that didn't heal properly.

That's a strange statement.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
Chiropracty, at best, is nothing more than glorified massage dressed up as quackery. At worst, a chiropractor can seriously ruin your health, permanently.
Chiropracty "helps" the same way cures for the common cold help, i.e., your body does all the work and the "cure" gets all the credit.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
If you can find a good one, osteopathy can be good. One consult ~$Aus50.
From what you're describing, though, I'd be very tempted to suggest acupuncture.
A good acupuncturist can do amazing things, especially with chronic, muscular pain.
Dope can be really helpful for short term relief.
But it has some major drawbacks. For one thing, it introduces a number of toxins which will increase overall stress on your system. So yeah, go with that to get you through the weekend if you have no other options, but not for extended periods.
Dope only helps on the symptom and when you stop, you only scream higher.
My suggestion wasn't meant as a joke - you got to learn how to use your back as it's supposed to be used.

You might try aspirin for two or three weeks or so, regularly three servings a day, or at the slightest sign of ache. Sometimes one is trapped by a muscular ache which one tries to relieve by an unnatural bearing of the body which again causes muscular ache.
If this doesn't help you should consult someone who really knows about the subject - a physician or a physiotherapist. Your health should be worth the money.
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?
