We withdrew because civilians, as Agathon proves today, have no realistic appreciation for military matters (to much TV and movies, or in Aggie's case videogames). In any case, it is established fact that the Viet Cong ceased to exist in any meaningful sense after Tet. The last part of American involvement saw action against NVA forces almost exclusively. Even after we left the Viet Cong hardly participated in the final collapse and fall of South Vietnam.

By 1971-1972 the Viet cong where in decent shape if not fine shape. The fall of Vietnam wasn't until 1975 so there is a lot of room for grandstanding and it is not only stupid but it is falacious to claim the North Vietnamese weren't a factor post 1969 Tet Offensive.
