                    • The trade deficit was better in March than expected. The 4.8% in Q1 might be revised upward to as much as 6%. Much higher than should be expected at this point in the business cycle.

Also of note lately is that the federal budget deficit is decreasing by a meaningful amount this fiscal year. The congresscritters are spending like drunken sailors, but fortunately, the revenue growth has been rather healthy.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                        • This thread has been infected by the herpes viris.

Anyway, I think the symptoms decrease in a few years. That's just what I heard though. And isn't there medicine for it now?

I believe you saw the article I posted from the Economist which predicted a $350 billion budget deficit this year. I suppose you will say the year's deficit is smaller as a percentage of GDP but that doesn't mean we don't need our politicians to actually start acting responsibly. The Republicans are definitely the party of big government and economic mismanagement.

                              • The deficit very likely will be less this fiscal year versus last ($319 billion), despite Katrina. Care to wager?

The president projects a $423 billion deficit. The Economist says $350 billion. I say less than $319 billion.
