                A flash drive probably appears as the /dev/sda1 device. So try doing

                mkdir flashmount
                mount /dev/sda1 flashmount

                Also, because of a bug in at least some linux versions, you have to ensure that any changes you make to the flash file system is written out to disk before you remove it. This is done by writing

                sync
                or alternatively
                umount flashmount

                between making the last change and removing the flash drive.

                  I found that you should always flush the cache out by doing a umount before removing any removable media.

                    This is what I did. But the boot is sda1 actually on the machine I was on. Then I had the mix up of mount != copy.

                    On the machine I was on, sdc1 should be used, not sda1 (no clue why).
