I was surprised by the number of murder cases that I heard about in Hangzhou alone. Most were robberies where the robber decided to leave no witnesses since the penalty for either crime would have been the same.

But I'm curious as to how they knew the children were sold, if no information about them was given.
Probably because she told them (the police) who informed the press. It's in the article, just not the details of where the kids went.

Apparently she was pretty chatty about the whole thing, she probably told them.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Ah, missed that. They should have said, "No further information was given." Australians.

This illustrates why it's a bad idea to impose the death penalty for any crime other than murder. If the criminal has already committed one capital crime (in this case, robbery), he has nothing to lose by commiting another capital crime, murder.

You can construct game-theoretic models of these situations and demonstrate mathematically that the death penalty does more harm than good when used for any crime other than murder.

True, actually. China's one-child policy has produced skewed sex ratios in rural areas and that in turn has created a "market" for wives. It appears that this women decided to use her "entrepreneurial" skills to sell product in those markets.

actually this did happen in the U.S. a few days ago. A guy tried to sell his baby to pay for renovations of his house.

Yep, he needed the money to finish renovating the nursery.

My Chinese/English translation isn't that good. Are we sure she said "Killing a person is no different than killing a chicken," and not "people taste kinda like chicken?"

I mean the taste like chicken line is a fairly common one, so that's no big deal right?

how can everything taste like chicken? If everything tastes like chicken, why aren't we eating that instead of chicken.

Nothing tastes like chicken. that's why we eat chicken.

There's a problem with her statement comparing killing people with killing chickens. She killed the people with poison. Would anyone kill a chicken, which one normally does for the purpose of eating it, by poisoning it? Maybe her problem is that she ate too many poisoned chickens and suffered brain damage.

Memo to the Chinese: Chickens can be easily killed by picking them up and snapping their necks. There is no reason to poison them. Eating poisoned chicken may be deleterious to your health, physical and mental.
