Karl Marx's dad converted his whole family to the religion of the cross just so he could get a job as a lawyer. Such things were commonplace throughout the 19th century in Western Europe.

Nice try - better living conditions witch meant that your 13 year old sons didn't have to find their own way of living or that girls at same age didn't have to marry some older man.

It was actually quite common to let young gils marry "older" mens simply to give them a chance to survive if you go just a hundred or two years back.

The change was purely manmade by industrialisation etc and certainly not by religion. We are still drawing that lump of iron on our feet, but fortunatedly it is dying out.

It's very easy for someone to say that industrialization and 'modernization' are better than religion - after all, you weren't alive when the capitalists were herding the agrarian peoples into the cities at the start of it all.

I'm pretty sure most people today aren't more spiritually fulfilled than people alive thousands of years ago. In fact, decidedly less so.

So don't argue with me that 'modernity' is synonymous with 'progress' because I am not vain enough to believe that.

Well, it has actually risen the average lifetime some years when capitalism was reined - compared to what religion could achive before that, it actually is a quite good bargain.

That is only because you see a change as an assault on your religious belief. Isn't it a little scary that only scientific progress has made it better to be a human being while religion has done it's best to destroy such improvements ?

Well, wouldn't you rather live slightly less but as a free human being, living a wholesome life with family and children, following God's laws, than live for longer in squalid, overcrowded city conditions, with no vision, no purpose in life?

Unfortunately the industrialization process has forced many people into taking the latter option, but human beings above all have spiritual needs, and when these needs cannot be fulfilled they will turn to destructive behaviours and other activities to dull their senses.

Really, most people today are slaves to the economic system. Hopelessly enslaved.
