This does not bode well for America's upcoming hurricane season.

Here in SoFla, building associations and owners are successfully arguing that they should only be required to put in the same sub-code glass they had before last seasons storms. I know I got some in my place. They aregue its too expensive to reinforce their buildings. So instead, we renters, etc. have to shoulder the increased insurance costs and risk.

There has been an increase in powerful cyclonic activity with cyclones forming off the Qld coast and moving west. This is more common with the La Nina ocean and atmospheric system. But the oceans in the region are also a degree warmer than average, possibly because of La Nina and/or global warming and therefore the storms seem to be more powerful. In years without La Nina episodes these cyclones tend to move south over the Pacific affecting no particular land mass instead of west to Qld and Northern Territory

Perhaps you can explain something that never made sense to me:

          1. People live in areas where hurricanes and/or earthquakes happen.
          2. People complain/cry when hurricanes and/or earthquakes hit them.

You could possibly add the following as well:

          3. People want their government handouts NOW .
          4. Go to #1. Repeat.

People go where the money is. Florida and Cali are where the jobs are. Florida leads the U.S. in job creation. So people flock here. Same as every dangerous place people move.

Australia for reasons of its national defence does need a population of people in the north of the country. As it is only about 2% of Australia's population lives in the most vulnerable areas, with another 6% or so in less vulnerable area down further south on the Qld coast. Therefore the country needs to bear a share of the cost of these cyclones as a whole.

There are economic reasons for populating the north of the country as well - tourism, mining and agriculture and their supporting industries are well represented in the area, and Darwin and Townsville are major regional ports.

Fortunately for the major centre of Darwin, the cyclone route turned SW rather than continuing W and headed over sparsely populated areas of land. It is now seriously weakened and will now only cause substantial flooding.

"Only cause substantial flooding" he says . . . I hope that was sarcasm.

People actually do believe that country exists now. . At first it was just Mel Gibson and crocadile dundee. But we've been exposed to more people from down under. So I think americans are starting to realize people actually do live down there.

How many times do I have to explain this?

Compasses point to the North, right?
And everybody knows that compasses are attracted to iron. And iron always sinks to the bottom.

Therefore compasses always point north because it's full of iron, which means it must be on the bottom.

                          It's very simple, people.

Cyclone Monica has depacted the Northern Territory, movementizationing into the Arafura Sea and unpacting to a tropical depression. The storm system is still dangering to strengthenize and repact along the Kimberley Coast.

So far, there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries, although there has been severe storm damage in remote communities.
