Razor gags aside, the pyramids in Egypts weren't built with slaves, though - they now reckon there was a team of well-fed professionals on the case. Not sure about the ones in the Americas though, labour laws were a bit more lax - with all the sacrifices and so on.

Good methodical excavation was pretty exceptional at the beginning of the 20th century (notable exceptions are Petrie etc.). Schliemann didn't know better
