We were always able to import good grad students from abroad but now alot of them aren't coming. Foreign interest in the US for college is way way down

This is very alarming, education is the backbone of any great nation and we are slipping at the roots
We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln

A few more interesting facts about education in America:

-The dropout rate has beens tuck around 30% for about 30 years dispite numerous reform efforts.

-Inflation adjusted spending on education is at its lowest level since the 1970's.

-Dropouts have the lowest life time earnings rate and the highest incarceration rate of any population group in the country.

-State and local governments deliberately cook the books to hide low graduation rates. Instead of looking at the total number of students who start high school vs the total number who finish high school most school districts only look at senior classmen who finish there senior year. This deliberately is designed to hide the high dropout rate. For instance Shelbyville, Indiana reports a graduation rate of 98% but fully 1/3 students who start high school never finish. They'll also play statistical games like assuming any dropout will later take and pass the GED (most don't).

-Cities like Houstin, Texas play further games by automatically assuming any dropout will later return and instead classifying pregnant teens, teens who join the military, or other hardship cases as students who will someday return. Statistically only 8% do.

-The US Census also systematically undercounts dropouts because prisoners do not fill out census forms. Approximately 3.4 million people are held in prisons in the US and the majority are college dropouts.

-Pushouts are increasing. Schools are under pressure to increase test scores so many schools are encouraging poorly performing students to dropout or get GEDs (supposedly a high school diploma equivalancy but in reality regulations are lower then getting a diploma so GED students tend to be the lowest performers of all students).

I just caught a terrifying speak by Mayor Villaraigosa this morning. He said that 40,000 students from every Los Angeles high school class drop out between their freshman and senior years.

Crap, what kind of life will they have??

This is not 'get out Iraq, buy books', but just facing the facts that I think you can afford it, you are the richest nation in the world, you CAN afford books for students that are up to date. For everyone.

It starts from there. Now that you have the necessary tools, I mean without these, it can't be accomplished. Next most important thing, look at where people study, what the school is like. Is it some run down place? If it is, fix it. It costs, but they payback is greater so it's a worthy investment.

Next up, teachers. how is the level of teachers in general? Demand more. It's a job of calling. Demand high standards. Pay them accordingly also.

These are absolute necessary things. After this is taken cared of, we can move forward and start cracking down the problems.

IF these aren't taken cared of, this IS the problem first. About problem areas and kids who don't want to learn and stuff, we can move to that when everyone has books, yes?
We like them not to have books. And then we beat them...

TCO, would you agree that the definition for stupid could be being against proper education? I mean that's fundamentally pretty stupid, yes?

I doubt DanS gets it but Karl Rove did indeed start distributing a "Talking Points Memo" to all the major news outlets in order that his propaganda (or spin if you prefer to call it that) could hit all the major news media at once. Some call that inspired politiciing but I consider that partisan use of federal funds and it says something about the main stream media that they just reprint those talking points so often.

I'd be surprised if every LAUSD high school even had 40,000 students. In fact I'd be surprised if the number was larger then 2k-3k per school. I believe he was saying 40k students dropout each year from LAUSD.

First game at Petco Park was late 2003. Now the Padres only play at Petco and the Chargers only play at Qualcomm. This of course means that both $400 million stadiums lay completely emplty 3/4-5/8 of the year. The main reason was that the owner of the Chargers and the owner of the Padres didn't like each other and didn't want to splite expenses with each other. The stadium deals are also the subject of another local Republican construction scandel in that the new one was financed via no bid contracts which the former mayor funneled to a local bank his wife was co-owner of (which cost several times market rate) while both the Chargers and the Padres have the city buy all unsold tickets at full face value; tickets which the city cannot give away to the poor or to school children. Right after these ticket deals were signed both owners gutted their teams to cut expenses; why pay for good players if you get the exact same income if the stadium is empty or full? The income is the same so you might as well just slash expenses and maximize profit.

Both team owners happened to be the single largest campaign contributors to the councilmen.mayor who signed the deal. Everyone was happy except the taxpayer. Like I said before our local Republicans are the most corrupt of a very corrupt lot.
