Philosophers tend to suck at real-world logic, for whatever reason.

Take a look at you, Whaleboy, and Agathon for instance.

Philosophy's awesome because in university it's so disconnected from the real world.

Agathon is a frickin teacher of it at a supposedly decent university, and he can't understand the logic and reasoning behind bigger marketshare --> bigger target --> more exploitation.

I've seen your threads in both areas, and I gotta say I'm glad I'm not going to school in Texas.

Not only me, but virtually every expert in the field says it, too. And it's pretty obvious from a logic and reasoning standpoint, which is why it's so damn difficult for modern Philosophy students to get.

Then again, is Baylor even a real university? How can you be a real university when you ban alcohol?

It sounds like an expensive Christian camp.

The logic they teach at Baylor is probably on par with Liberty University's logic courses.

I'm not saying that liberal arts people make money, but it is important for people to learn how to think, not just what to think.

Look at how well the Liberal Arts majors do in the real world. At least they're up 6% this year.

I've heard that so many times, but I swear to God the vast majority of Philosophy majors really don't know how to think...either that or they're intellectually incapable of it. Agathon, again, textbook example.

His opinions and behavior are just so bizarre and lacking in logic and reason.

Like i said, I don't disagree with you about how much you make. I'm glad you posted that though, because I haven't seen it before, and it looks like i did really well for myself Particularly since the cost of living in Texas is so low

No point in subsidizing either. Supply and demand should drive students and wages and all that. If you subsidize engineer education, you just create more engineers and drive down wages (of benefit to employers of course).

There is nothing magical about engineering versus softer stuff. Be careful of thinking that we can micromanage the economy. The Soviets worshipped at the alter of heavy industry and forced electrification and such and it was a terrible misallocation of resources.

You didn't directly mention them, but two points:

Yes. Having students who study actual knowledge (as opposed to a technical skill) is good for a society. It is good to have mathematicians and engineers, but also to have political theorists, economists, and yes, even philosophers.

                              1) Mathematicians are more properly considered scientists than anything else (other than their own category)

                              2) Shi's post mentioned scientists extensively. By arguing that we need people with "knowledge" rather than "technical skill" you are implying, either deliberately or accidentally, that the people he wishes to fund (which included scientists) do not have "knowledge", but only "technical skill"
